Looking at potentially buying the variable speed model to repaint a couple rooms in the house. Anyone have any experience with these? Reviews are mixed but YouTube videos make it look pretty easy.

I've owned two.

Spraying a room is doable, but a hassle. Tape off everything solidly, including the ceiling. Shut off all HVAC. Wear a respirator.

When spraying, speed, distance to target and fan tip are very important. Too slow/close and you will have runs or high gloss spots. Too fast/far and you will get a washboard look and flaky/rough finish. You will have to refill frequently with the small cup or even the quart attachment. Buy the extension wand for ceiling work.

Clean up with these units is important and time consuming. Lots of parts to clean out, lots of residual paint to flush. Make sure it is immediately and thoroughly cleaned every time, or it will die. Stow it away with the armor solution every time, or it will die.

The best use for this was quickly painting numerous doors during a remodel without having to do much thinning. Second best use was paint ceilings, since overhead roller work is exhausting.

I have a Wagner 595 I used to remodel the house. It worked really well once I got the settings just right. I'm looking to sell it as I have no need for it any more. Just an idea if interested.

I have the Graco X5 painter, it's great but the prep and cleanup can be cumbersome. I only use it if I'm painting a large space or outside where I don't have to tape off as much. My model allows me to drop the handle in water and I don't have to clean the entire unit between coats.

Jeez, you used that to paint rooms?

I did rooms, cabinets, doors, stained a fence, and the outside of a shop. Worth every penny.

I've used that to paint a shed. So much faster than brush & roll. Used a shield for the roofline. Still tiring to hold it up.

I guess the Graco Truecoat Ive used is just a piece of crap then. I stopped 2 seconds into spraying my shed to borrow a legit spray rig from a friend.

Thanks for all the replies. Ended up with the Graco 360 variable speed. Masking and taping took awhile but the sprayer worked fairly well.
