I have a fairly new (2yo) 2 stage lennox system with new duct work and with this 106 temps it can keep the house at 82. It cools down at night, I set it at 68 overnight and it got there. I know my insulation is **** but is this to be expected?

Mine maintains 75 while set at 72 during peak 106+ days lol
it is what it is

82 though is not acceptable

mine is 10 years old, 2 units

Humidity levels? Sounds like maybe air infiltration from the attic

2yr old Trane heat pump variable
Existing metal ductwork
Min.wool insulation 1980: walls foilfoam R-3.5+R-13, attic 9-12"
Compo shingles

Coolest, most comfortable in 40 years, even in those temps Aggieland
however even with tons of single pane glass, some getting direct E-W sun
4tons/1776sf ... some math homework to do .....
This ratio was the genesis of any HVAC calculation, as taught by Architect/Engineer Prof. Kellett TAMU in-the-day (pre manual j) .... (525sf/ton if an insulated floor above it)

Had a similar problem in my house. Especially knowing the state of the insulation, fixing that problem was way cheaper that trying to get the AC to overcompensate for that.

Hell I'm in a 3 year old house and I set mine to 77 during day and it stays around 79 by mid afternoon. On top of that electricity bill is $400. Don't know what to do to keep AC from running all damn day

I'm in a 25 year old house in Arizona. June 5 I got a new Daiken unit. Yesterday broke a string of 31 days in a row above 110 with 5 days at 119. I set it at 78 during the day and it's perfectly comfortable. Around 7pm I drop to 77. Of course there's no humidity so the air is easier to cool. First bill was $200. Very pleased with Daiken.

I have owned three homes now. In all of them I have always been able to run whatever temp I wanted in whatever weather.

This is the first summer in my current house and I can't get the AC below 74 degrees even at 10:00 at night.

I just had the duct work completely re-done, and every time I call my HVAC tech he just tells me that it's normal for these outside temps…but I mean, I have never had this issue.

We live in an 84 yr old pier-and-beam home near The Heights that has horrible insulation and aging HVAC. AC seems to be struggling worse this year than previous. When we moved in, I bought an LG 15000 BTU/110V window unit for the master bedroom (East side of house) to supplement, and in case the main AC or power went out (it will run off our generator). Judge all you want, but I can get the master bedroom to 63 degrees at night and sleep like a baby! This year we've been leaving it on low during the day and place a tower fan in the doorway that blows the cold air into the hallway/other rooms. Helps take a load off the main one.

Then on Prime day this year, I came across a Midea unit on sale that had great reviews and bought one. It's a "Smart Inverter" unit (the fan speeds up/down as needed to maintain temp) that is "U-Shaped" with a split down the center that allows you to almost completely close the window (pic below). This cuts way down on the noise (we can barely notice when its running on high). I put this one in the living room (West side of house) that struggled to get below 78 during the day. I keep it set at 73 during the day when we are gone to work for the doggos.

I now set the central AC to 76 during the day and it rarely kicks on. Once I get home, I set both to 70 until dark then switch on the central AC. Def worth it for us since we dont plan to be in this house much longer and dont want to spend money on new insulation or a new HVAC system. And both units are on the east/west walls of the house, hidden behind the privacy fence so no one can see/hear them. I'd recommend picking up one of these to supplement your current system if you don't want to drop thousands on a new system or insulation.

Maybe they didn't size the ductwork properly?

Get new insulation in your attic. Will make a world of difference.

Not sure if mentioned but make certain you don't have a fresh air intake. If you do, close that **** off until you sell the house. Major problem in our new neighborhood.

Not sure how old your home is.

We have a variable speed Lennox in the house & it has handled this heat just fine. No matter what we set it on, the dehumidifier function keeps it about 3 degrees under that.

That said, it's just the 2 of us & we have always had a window unit in the master. No one can see it and it's like a meat locker in there at night!

edit to add: During our recent renovation we went overboard with insulation in the attic to compensate for lousy windows - 1960's single pane crank out metal casement windows that LOOK fantastic but let in plenty of air. I think we could BBQ in here & not have a carbon monoxide problem.

How would I go about checking this? They are building a lot so there is dust everywhere in neighborhood and having to change filters regularly, so I'm assuming mine is turned on

With the new unit, had all new duct work installed. AC repair man came out and said it was because our condensors were covered (cottonwood across the street and dryer vent right by outside unit). Said I could pay 300 to have him do it or I could. Just changing the filter made a noticeable difference, hopefully spraying the coils will help as well.

Ok... so hopefully someone can explain this.

I have now learned I have a multi-speed air handler. I am not sure if my condenser needs to be multi-speed also (is that even a thing?)

So up until today I have been thinking that my unit could not cool my house. Lets say I would set it to 74 degrees, it would reach 74, but it would just never shut off. I have been figuring it was because it was never reaching the threshold to turn off.

But now that I know I have a multi-speed, is it even trying to get to the point where it shuts off? Or is slowing down so that it is maintaining temperature and air flow? Will it only shut off when it cant go any slower and maintain the current temp?

You'll have a duct connected to an exterior wall. Will dump prior to air handler.

We have a variable speed one - I guess that is like yours. It almost never shuts off but it goes into a dehumidifying mode that is barely blowing & the condenser unit barely runs, too. It drops our house temp down by 3 degrees from our setting while doing it's thing. I don't know the exact answers to your questions, but this system is handling this heat like a champ. I know it does stop sometimes - just not sure how or why. We do change the filter more often since it runs a lot.

I had this exact issue. There was a hole in the plenum (duct right after the coil) causing a lot of the air to dump in the attic.

If you are in dfw you most likely have a fresh air Intake and should turn it off when it is really hot or cold at the very least. There are several different configurations/ways it could look.

Take some pictures of your equipment and the area around it in the attic and I can probably point it out.

Usually, you can just unplug itm

I'm having the same problem with my smaller unit. It runs all day and barely keeps it near 80 even when set to 74 during the day. My bigger unit works with no problem so I know it's not insulation since my house is only 1 year old. So help me figure out what is going on with the smaller unit so I can ask the guy the right questions.

During the build I had them remove the exterior air intake for what others have said. At this point, I don't think they build my system big enough to cool the cubic feet required. Anyone know the calculations?

Also, if anyone has a reliable AC company that isn't a bunch of thieves in DFW, please let me know.

If your system is designed per code, then it's not designed to keep up with 106F in Texas. You can over design the system (and a lot are), but there's nothing necessarily wrong if it's struggling to hit 68F (design spec cooling set point is 74F).

See this often when installers/builders undersize to cut cost

Saw one that was 1680 sq feet, had a 3 ton for 20 years on it and would struggle to hold set temp when temp was over 100. Now it has 3.5 ton and will hold 72 all day long even on days that are above 105

Also saw this where a 3.5 ton was on a 1900 sq ft house. Switched to a 4 ton system and the bill dropped ~ 30% and will hold set temp even on the hottest days.

Ok I'll take some photos. I'm in Magnolia so not sure how much different it would be vs DFW.

FYI- assuming your attic space is accessible and not cluttered, the effort and expense to add in a foot or two of blown insulation is not bad (when attic temps permit). I did it six years ago to my future wife's 1600sqft house in Spring Branch, DIY from Lowe's was a half day job with her assisting that made a massive difference.

ETA- if you have soffit and ridge venting, make sure you protect the path of airflow before blowing in insulation.

2500sqft 1 story. 5 ton unit that is 10ths old. It can maintain whatever temp we desire. Currently set at 75 and it's 75 inside. 102 outside.

Problem is it runs all the time. For 2 years now I've said I'm going to have insulation added and haven't done it. We do have new windows and house is 21yrs old.

Maybe this fall I add the insulation finally

When adding insulation, cover the ductwork as well while checking for leaks/holes, no ducktape.

Begin shading all windows, HVACs even if only solar screens & staple gun for now.

Hose clean ext. HVACS, change int. HVAC filters more often

Reduce use of ext, doors ... once out, do many chores not just one.

If no water rationing, then water roof at high temps or when about to drop off for the day

500sf/ton suggests this sytem is not running like clockwork as it should .... and is only single stage = ON-OFF full blast, not ideal when heat is a constant inside house

Design temp is 97 degrees outside. It's been 103-107 which is over design temp. Your unit is supposed to be running a LOT. My unit is running 14-15 hours a day right now with unit set to 75 during the day

When I say it's running all the time, I just mean it's on and off throughout the day. It's currently off but house is set at 73 so it's only turning off for 10-20 min before it clicks back on.

It's not having an issue with cooling or maintaining the temp

I just figured adding insulation would help the house maintain its temp better.

I also looked in the attic fans but seems to be a mixed review on them being better or worse than insulation and issues with them burning up.

I was in the same boat OP, then i got lucky. I happened to click on my Nest app at work and saw that for some reason it had changed my upstairs thermostat to ECO. It wasn't cooling at all and temp was 88 upstairs. Not sure why the app changed, but I turned everything to manual and I'm at 74-75 now upstairs.

I had already called my AC guy and was on his schedule. Lol. Embarrassing!

It serves a dual purpose if you are into hanging baskets that are hung to collect rainwater near roof edge and get thirsty from high temperatures. In Aggieland it works best when sun is setting and only when baskets are thirsty. Again, when there's no water rationing in effect. TIP: try not to power spray/disturb granules as much as possible ... spray upward like rainfall & gently.

Jabin
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't have any hanging baskets, so that's not a consideration.

How often do you water down your roof? If only in the evening, that wouldn't seem to have much of an impact on your roof and attic temps.
tgivaughn
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Agree with "doesn't seem"
but at setting sun times
when baskets need water
they get water +
roof/attic gets cooler, as does West deck/yard ... a bit,
then sun goes away
HVAC goes into low gear
inside "feels" cooler in less than 1/2hr
but that's just me doing it since 1980 same house

If you do the science & run the numbers, please share with all of us.

This is not THE answer, just one of many options to test on YOUR problem, as we all are doing ... now counting 30 days over 100F ... might as well as move to AZ
