Anyone have recommendations on security camera brand? We're looking to install Power over Ethernet ones and have a Network Video Recorder (NVR) on premise at our house.

Reolink seems to fit the bill the best, but I have no experience in this area. But there are tons of brands out there from Lorex, Annke, etc.

Ideally the cameras are 4k w/color night vision.

Thought about posting on the Nerdery too, but starting here.

I have some reolink r-510s, and they have performed flawlessly for the year I have had them installed.

I don't use their software or their NVR, but they work just fine with my NAS.

I will say that their "motion detection" and the like is garbage. Unless you'd like to know every time the wind blows… I turned this off and don't use it. Otherwise no problems.

The Reolink ones have a weird codec implementation and weird firmware, which makes them hard to use with some NVR software. Dahua and Amcrest are the big names that get rebranded all over the place. Tiny bit more expensive than Reolink, but the quality seems better. I have a couple Amcrest in addition to the Reolinks, and the Amcrest are much better. They have more sub streams, and they have better day and night picture.

I have the exact setup you're looking for. POE cameras, 4K/8mp, no motion detection, facial recognition, or any else anything fancy. These are the cameras I use. The picture quality on them is fantastic, both day and night. They also have tons of settings where you can tweak the colors/light settings to really get the best picture, and you can have different settings for both day and night mode.

I'm using them with an NVR I bought from the same company at that link. If you have any questions pick up the phone and call them. A real life person will answer the phone and talk you through whatever you need. They are very helpful and have great customer service.

Look at EmpireTech on Amazon. It's EmpireTech Andy's storefront. He also posts and has many pages on IPcamtalk.com

This is the way to go. Dahua/Loryta cameras with US based firmware and supposedly no backdoors. I still keep mine on a separate vlan with no public internet access.

OP, he usually has good sales a few times a year if you can wait to stock up. Usually Prime Day, which happened last week, is one of the big ones

If you haven't watched any of Rob's videos on camera reviews, it's worth a watch. Here's the one talking about color night vision cameras.

He's a former highschool science teacher and ended up making more doing YouTube than teaching, so he's now doing reviews of tech products full time.
