I am in a house on the coast with original double paned windows, vinyl frames (25 years +/-). Some of the windows are fogged. I have functioning storm blinds on all windows. I am stuck trying to decide between replacing only the glass, replacing the whole windows or going all out and replacing everything with impact windows.

Anyone have experience with just replacing the glass? Reasons not to?

Yeah if they're replacing 15 windows before noon I'd think they're skipping a few steps and are probably paid per window and don't have to worry about call backs.

I have replaced the double pane glass in a number of large windows in my house due to broken seals. Two years ago the price per window was in the $350 range and I recently got quotes for almost triple that. They said sorry about the price increase but take it or leave it. I tried to buy the glass directly from the supplier and DIY but they wouldn't give me a quote. I decided the foggy view wasn't that bad.

In your opinion, is he worth nagging to get him to do glass replacement?

If vinyl frames are original and in good condition then leave them. New Construction windows should have a nail flange and Tyvek wrap and tape to create a better weather barrier around the window. Most replacement crews pull/wreck out the existing frame and cut back the Tyvek house wrap.

Replacement windows typically just slip into the old window's rough opening and then get screwed and caulked in to place.

I've seen about 15 replacement frames and impact windows installed before noon and then replaced about 2 years later after driven rain intrusion.

Agreed.

Unless the frame is severely damaged it's best just to replace the glass because if you replace the frame your weather barrier gets screwed up and youre at the mercy of the caulk and any moisture that gets through your rain screen(masonry, siding etc.).

31 window panes-glass installed in my frames ( some larger non opening windows and some regular opening windows)
Double pane, with or without Argon.

Right at $10k total

Does this sound like it's in today's ballpark?

Seems completely reasonable to me combing from someone that just replaced a couple of window glass inserts.

Thanks-just to clarify, when I say "window panes" that is one square of glass-a regular opening window would have Two panes, an upper and a lower.

These are a few of VerMex responses after I "poked" him after a while with no response. This whole exchange (there were a few more) took about 5-6 weeks. I never received an estimate or a request to visit the house
