I live in the Little Rock area which has been bombed with hail storms recently. Fortunately, I have managed to avoid them so far but they are predicting more in the future. One can only dodge successfully for so long. If and when I get roof damage from a hail storm, what should I look for in a roofer.? Typically after such storms, many questionable roofers come out of the woodwork. When one is in a hurry for a new roof or repaired roof, what should you look for In order to get a competent and trustworthy roofer?

Well, I'd obviously love to help you out. I don't work Little Rock (reason fail on my end). I put together a quick write up on answering your exact question.

Hopefully this isn't too cheesy. I needed it quick and I felt like I was about to bust out a geocities page, but it seems to work ok.

It's not all boiler plate or gospel, just reasonable guidelines. Every company operates a little different so there can be some flexibility and still be a good company.

Of course, My phone and email is still wide open if you'd rather talk in person or have other questions.

Thanks, great write up. You work in the Little Rock, AR, area? That surprises me that you are able to go that far from Houston and San Antonio. If that's correct, I'll definitely give you a call if and when I need roofing services.

I read ROUND ROCK. Lol. Little Rock is a drive. Post amended but the process is the same and I'm still 100% available for phone calls if you need guidance or have questions about the process or anything that sounds funny with your contractor.

The only thing I would add to that write-up is verifying the insurance documents. There are plenty of shady contractors, especially in residential, that will get a policy, print off the document, and then cancel the policy so they have something to show they're, "insured." Call the insurer and verify the policy is active if there any doubts.

That's a good idea too. You can ask your roofer to have you, the homeowner, endorsed by name on his policy. I've done that several times.

Most of those guys don't even attempt to produce a document. To be fair, most people don't ask for mine. Maybe one person a year. I try it include them in my documents if I have a stack handy, and they are always attached to my email correspondence. The insurance is crucial. Things don't generally go wrong, but they can, and they can go wrong in a big way really fast.

It happens surprisingly often. The last GC I worked for is doing just under $1 billion in work a year, and we'd see it pretty frequently with subs. You didn't get a contract or get paid unless you were actively insured, and part of our verification process was calling the insurance company and verifying the required policies (GL, Auto, WC, and umbrella). I was talking to our insurance specialist once, and he said he saw it a handful of times a month. With more fly by night contractors in residential I'm sure it's just as if not more prevalent.
