Remodeling the kitchen, and we're getting a new refrigerator to match everything else. Reviews and opinions vary, but on line it appears Samsung and LG dominate in buyers and good reviews. HOWEVER, a repairman I know hates them both and he loves Frigidaire and GE.

Opinions?

We Samsung, we love it and the only issue we've had is with the ice maker (very well known issue.). Repair guy came out says he does about 3-4 of them a day swapped out a part and was gone within 30 minutes.

heard bad things about Samsung which sucks because they look nice.

Warned sister in law about it but she bought it anyway. Got it and it wouldn't cool out of the box. Repair person came out and couldn't figure it out. Someone else had to come by again and they fixed it. Then she had another problem with it. Luckily it was still under warranty so she was able to get a refund on it.

I guess we're old fashioned. We buy appliances from appliance companies (Frigidaire, Maytag, GE), and cell phones from cell phone companies.

But you buy phones from an insurance company? Samsung was originally an insurance company. Things change.

The answer is a 90s Kenmore or Whirlpool. Still running our '98 model in the kitchen. It's a beast. Just keep the coils clean.

So if your ice maker is like ours in the top upper left hand corner. The warranty guy replaced the part that turns the auger that dispenses ice. We were having an ice build up on it. Sorry not much more help I didn't pay much attention since it was under warranty. Just talked to guy for minute about what we can do to not let it happen again. He literally said, "nothing you can do, it's a crappy design and system by Samsung that they haven't fixed. So this might last 2 months might last 2 years but just call us back when it messes up again!"

We have side by side Electrolux fridge and freezer that with an adapter kit, looks like on huge unit. No complaints yet being that it's only 3 years old, but it has developed a very small condensation leak below the fridge that I'm holding my breath on my DYI repair. I don't think it had insulation out far enough to cover the portion of tubing that was getting cold, causing the drip drip leak.

Of course a repairman would love brands that a) makes fast warranty paybacks to him b) has plenty of repairs to feed his family.

Firestone used to repair our old cars which I thought - at the time - pretty good, now have better ideas.
When a car got old enough, repairs expensive enough, asked them for an honest referral for a new one.
Mustang
Really?
Well, that old used Mustang cost us a bundle, esp. not finding a root of many problems - IVR, a $15 part that even I could DIY.
So back to the referrer: why Mustang?
Mustang repairs brings in the most money around here.

Was in Buddy' Appliances long ago on biz.
SubZero in the window on sale for almost Cost!
What's wrong with it?
Lasy customer made us eat it - wrong color - NOT almond white.
WHAT?
It IS exactly almond white = the color of our almost new countertops!
She said no.
I didn't have the money ... boohoo ... saving for 4 kids' college.

So since most judge today's refrigerators as junk, no matter the brand, hope you find a deal like I did with cash in hand.

I lucked into a sale in 2013 and think it the best ref. we ever had since the 80's
Samsung RSG257AARS ... for what's that worth.

Forgive the spelling .....

I would avoid the Samsung refrigerator for the reasons above. Our ice maker also stopped working right. We had an appliance guy over for a different issue and asked about the Samsung ice maker. He was very familiar with the issue, but also said he refuses to work on them.

His position was that Samsung knows of the issue, but will not issue a permanent fix. His opinion was that there was is an issue with a seal, which allows in air or moisture or some such, which causes ice to build up. But, he didn't think there was a good, permanent fix for that and everything is just temporary, which causes people to get frustrated when it fails after X months/years.

This is not my field of expertise at all, so that could all just be bogus because he didn't want to work on it. But, it seems plausible, and I appreciate that he didn't take the opportunity to charge me for a fix that may not be reliable. Long story short, it is a known issue, Samsung refuses to fix it, and I'd avoid that brand for that appliance. It also makes me hesitant to purchase that brand for any other appliance. However, we have a Samsung washer/dryer (bought before the fridge) and they have been just fine. Good luck.

I buy appliances with massive review counts good reviews. I figure a high production volume streamlines and/or eliminates any issues.

Have a 10 year old whirlpool fridge that has never had any issues. Just retired a 19 year old whirlpool oven/microwave combo that never had any problems at all.

Samsung ice maker is an incredibly common issue. That said I had one at our last house and liked it fine besides that. I fixed it myself. Was a PITA to defrost the buildup that is part of the problem but the fix was easy. I fabricated a small metal piece that was needed. Easier than dealing with scheduling repair for me.

I agree with this
The longest lasting, EZiest to replace DIY ice maker out there.
That said, better, faster ice comes from a you-fill-it countertop 110v icemakers Amazon/Walmart sell (we have for backup, soft-for-teeth & guests)

Well, I jinxed it. The fridge stopped working yesterday. A ton of food gone to waste. Fortunately, it appears to just be the start relay. Going to replace the overload protector while I'm at it. Fridge turned 25 years old this month.

Also looking at a monitor system. Something like this: Fridge Temp Monitor

We got a Thermador. No frills. No water dispenser on the door. No ice maker in the door. Just an ice maker in the freezer.

I've had the same Samsung refrigerator since 2012. Zero repairs required. Ice maker works fine.

We had the same problem (ice build up) and Samsung has fixed it a few times for free. The last time it was a control board that broke (no ice build up like before). The tech that came out for that commented that the previous guy had done a good job implementing the fix. Basically involves sealing all of the seams well with caulk. It's been a few years since it froze over and I've had to defrost.

All that to say there is a fix to the ice build up issue it just needs to be done well.

Been down this road way too many times unfortunately. Bottom line is that all refrigerators are crap these days. They are built on the edge of failure from the factory to get energy star ratings. The only reason that GE is "preferred" by repairmen is that parts are usually readily available. Buy the cheapest option that you like and fits your needs/wants.

GE will never get another penny from me though. Not even light bulbs.
