Anybody had the permanent lighting that can be customized installed. Looking to possibly have it done rather than having to add and remove lights each year also will be nice to utilize it for extra security lighting during non holiday times. Any recommendations? Pros/cons? Having a company called Blingle coming out next week to to a consult/quote.

Some people moved in last year down the street and had it installed (I'm not sure who did it). I thought it was going to be cool but it looks dim and terrible when they used it for the holidays. I'd be interested in it if I could see their work in person before having it done. I know it's pricey

We had a company named Astoria install ours in March. All in it was around $5000 which ended up being $22 per linear ft. They look good - no different than traditional lights except that you can customize the colors and patterns, etc. Given how expensive it is to have someone hang lights in our neighborhood, we'd break even in 3 years so it was worth it for us. Obviously cheaper to do it yourself but we have a two story house with super pitched roof lines so no thanks.

Navigating the Blingle website is not productive and seems best for residential ideas limited to on-the-fascia, hoping that Blingle will contract to replace outages with their man-lifts (never DIY from rooftops).
That said, there was one gallery photo of up lighting floods, always an architect's favorite.

So I may suggest any top-rated local electrician can install
  • up lighting near bottom of your exterior walls (or down lighting from soffits)
  • switched soffit outlets for plug-in Christmas/holiday lighting (DIY or pros if taken down from hooks)
  • even permanent lighting in a more creative pattern scheme that might go unnoticed when Off when holidays pass

A well stocked specialized lighting center can guide your choices and even suggest electricians suited for those choices.

If I missed the boat as to your goals, sorry.
Looking forward to your solution posts.

Yea with our house we have no need for the up lighting out of flower beds/landscaping. I am more looking for the holiday lighting aspect so won't have to put up/take down lights every year. Also convenient that can just turn on certain areas to enhance lighting for security purposes also. Plan on being in this house for next 10-15 years

They did good job and the lights look good with no issues so far? Astoria is one of companies on list to get quote from. Have you noticed a jump in electricity costs due to them being on?

Yeah, they did a good job. I'd recommend Astoria. Lights look great, app works well - kids like all the colors and animation. It's all LED and the control box for the entire house (277 lights total) plugs into one outlet so I don't think it draws a big load. Haven't noticed a difference on my electric bill yet but we also don't have it on all the time.

Someone on our neighborhood did them on his house, fences, and gazebo. Looks like a carnival year round.

Yea I can definitely see people going overboard and it being annoying. My plan is only to do front gutter area and ridges in front of our house and maybe 10 ft down each side to wrap it a little around side. And 90% of year would just be white lights for added light on security side and change colors for some of the holiday times.

+1 for Astoria

Had them install our lights last year. They work great and we have the architectural/accent pattern on a nightly schedule. Haven't noticed any increase in kWh.

Several of the homes around us have the permanent lighting. They are generally pretty nice looking except those with a horrible sense of color. I think they all used JellyFish Lighting but I could be wrong.

THe only issue I've noticed, and it may be related to how the home builder contructed the edges of the roof, is the lights sometimes look blurry.

It is a very odd sensation when looking at them from an angle - as if you're looking through glasses that have a smudge right in your direct line of vision. When facing the lights head on you don't see it, but when approaching the home it looks blurry.

FWIW we take photagraphy gel plastic and put it on all of our uplights during the holidays. It then colors the home, trees, etc., in red or green lighting. It is subtle relative to string lights, but we like the the low glow around the yard. We don't have uplights mounted to the wall of the home. Instead we did landscape lighting aimed up at the home. it gives a cool effect through the bushes/trees in the beds as they cast shadows across the house.

I also replace the bulbs on the italian lights/string lights in the back yard with alternating colors the length of the string.
Staff - take out the trash.

Just an update for others that might be interested. I ended up going with Jellyfish Lighting. They did a fantastic job on the install and we are very happy so far. The ability to customize is great just gotta learn the app more.

We did Astoria and like it. Neighbors like it too. I put it on the lower setting, and every other 4th light on otherwise its too bright. 5k all in and saves yearly Christmas light installation plus can celebrate all holidays with different patterns. Well worth it if you live there for 5+ yrs.
aggiecody06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yea we have it on every 7th light for accent/security lighting. Ours was little under 4K but super happy so far and don't ever have to worry about roof climbing for hanging lights make it well worth every penny so far.

Honestly, I thought this was a dumb idea with your initial post, but this looks great. I may have to look into it for our place. One of the saddest days of the year is when I pull down the LED C9 lights from our roof in January.

Lol yea it looks fantastic and well worth it if you'll be house for 5+ years. The only downfall I've had so far is the app that Jellyfish has created definitely has room for improvement but it is functional and a minor hiccup. They light tracks are invisible until get up to house as well.

Can you post some close up images of the lights and tracks? Their website doesn't have any product data type sheets and no up close shots of their installs.

I think you can upload to Imgur website or app for hosting for free and then just embed the link over here?

I got a quote from Jellyfish and Oelo and I am leaning toward the Oelo lights.

Obviously a biased source, but the warranty is something and from the pictures the Oelo are significantly brighter.

https://www.oelo.com/permanent-holiday-lighting-comparison/

The one other thing to consider is that Oelo is cloud based so it can be controlled from anywhere but I think Jellyfish can only be controlled from locally.
aggiecody06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Jelllyfish has cloud as well that is free, I looked at Blingle that used Oleo and it was an extra like $250 for that service.

Mind sharing what your $/LF ended up at?

Did you have them quote material only as well, or was it always for them to install?
aggiecody06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's was all included in Jellyfish pricing was roughly $26/linear ft. When Blingle quoted us they quoted it at $21/linear ft for parts only then another $9/linear Ft for install so was closer to $30/linear Ft.

+1 for Astoria

I spoke with 3-4 other people in our hood and they all highly recommended them to us. They installed for us about a year ago and so far so good. Our neighbor loved it and had Astoria install theirs last month.

I'm definitely not saying you paid too much, but it's crazy to see what type of markup these companies are making.

Each light (pixel/node) can be bought by you and I for ~$.20/each (I've bought thousands). You basically end up paying for their trim/mounting pieces, the controller, labor, and whatever app is used to control it.
