I don't need my stove to text me.
I'd absolutely love to be able to preheat the oven so it's ready when I get home.
Preheat takes, what 7-9 minutes?
Can dinner really not be delayed 7-9 minutes?
As soon as you walk in, you turn it on. Then you go to the bathroom, change out of work clothes, pour a drink, check your phone, and the oven is preheated.
First, I'd say for most electric ovens it's closer to 15 minutes. Maybe the poster wants the oven ready when he gets home so he can throw the food in, then go to the bathroom, change out of work clothes, pour a drink, check his phone, and the food is cooked?

But, the entire point of smart appliances/features is a small, fractional "improvement." Literally every person posting about why they like a smart thermostat, light, door locks, etc. are because of small fractional improvements, most not saving anywhere near 10 minutes of time. Hell, someone posted they like their smart thermostat so they don't have to get out of bed to change it.

I'd say having to wake up at 2 am because you are cold and having to get out of bed to turn up heater is quite a bit more of an inconvenience than having dinner 10 minutes later than your desired time.

Who eats dinner at exactly a specific time anyway, without room for a 10 minute swing?

Most items like locks, lights, garage door, etc are for more than a simple savings of a few minutes of your time or just preventing sheer laziness like getting up.
I open my garage and/or unlock front door for neighbors all the time when I'm gone, and inevitably forget to turn off thermo when we leave for a week, so can do it while sitting at the airport.
I don't have any smart lights, though I have motion sensor lights in places like the pantry and our mudroom, which is a game changer in those areas, as well as security lights around perimeter of home.

My oven can be set to heat up at a specific time without being connected to the internet. Don't pretty much all of them do that?

bought two air purifiers recently that had 'upgraded' models that included wifi connectivity. I can't imagine that I'm going to get any incremental benefit that offsets the headache of installing an app, creating an account, and getting it all connected.

Things that I enjoy having connectivity:

Ecobee - it's nice to make adjustments with my phone.

Robot vacuum - I probably wouldn't miss it if it wasn't connected, but it is nice to be able to stop it if it decides it has to be in my office when I'm on a call.

Kasa bulbs - I love being able to program cycles and voice change the lighting.

August Lock - I don't carry a house key now. That means I can leave the house with only my car fob in my pocket 98% of the time.

I have a 3 year old. That extra 10 minutes of pre-heating the oven can be the difference in a kid in a good mood at dinner and a complete meltdown. I also have a 1 year old, so she's on deck for the same meltdowns.

Also, sure, there are things that are a bigger inconvenience than waiting on the oven and most of the time I have an extra 10 mins, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy the ability to pre-heat the oven remotely.

hah. I've had two 3 year olds.. just a few years ago. Can't ever remember a meltdown due to a 10 minute late dinner.. then again, maybe our very inconsistent dinner time has its advantages.

I haven't carried a house key for the 15+ years I've been a homeowner.. it's called an attached garage!

About 10 years ago my team at the time built an app for a major oven brand. The primary use case was scanning the bar code of a frozen pizza at the grocery store and coming home to the oven preheated to the recommended temp. It worked and consumers liked the concept but they couldn't get UL approval. UL would only allow remote oven operation if you had manually turned on a one-time remote enable mode since the last time anyone had touched the control panel or opened the door.

Having a wifi enabled irrigation controller is a game changer when doing maintenance. It's also nice to be able to cancel scheduled runs when away from home. And the app is so much more user friendly than any controller I've ever used.
Plus if you have neighbors that walk their dog and let them crap in your yard without cleaning up their mess, you can just activate the zone in that area immediately and soak them if you catch them in the process!
