You had a $500 electric bill and the isn't perfect? How's the wife handling that?

I like projects but I would have probably blasted it on CL by now.

Heck no! Bought a grinder and stuffer and I'm loading it up with homemade sausages now! Maybe I'll sell some to offset the electric bill.

BUMP!

Figured some of you thought this was funny last time around. I've been making lot of sausages/snack sticks and selling to family and friends. Got me thinking I needed a bigger grinder that I could do 30-40 lb batches more efficienty. Went to the auction site today and saw a grinder that retails $31,000+tax and simply put my "max bid" at $3,000. Holy hell. Won the damn thing. After winning I looked up the specs and it weighs 914 lbs and will grind 60 lbs of meat per minute. My wife is going to be pissed! Will report back later to tell you if it works, if I can plug it into my wall, and if it fits in my garage.

No-go dude! Says that it needs three phase juice, which your house is highly unlikely to have. But after the freezer part of this thread, never say never??

Edit: says plug type is a NEMA 5-20P, which is single phase. One part of the spec sheet is wrong... just need to find out which part.

Will let you join in on the ride of uncertainty! Hopefully this one fits in my garage and plugs into my wall, and then actually works. That would save many steps compared to the freezer!

May have an inverter built in. My wood lathe has a 3 phase 220 motor but plugs into single phase 220

Link to actual Hobart spec sheet. Says it has an L15-30P plug, which is a true 3-phase input. OP, you'll likely need a rotary or solid-state phase converter to power this unit at your house.

Thanks! I have no clue what that means. Is it just like the freezer where I need to add a new specific outlet in my wall, or is there an adaptor that can allow for it to plug into a normal plug?

You have single phase power on your house. That thing needs three phase. You need an external black box to artificially create three phase power. No, it's not just a different plug.

EDIT: Coserv coming out Monday to tell me if they can provide 3 phase power to my house. If not, then it's going to sit for a while, or I'm going to flip it.

As was posted above you can buy a converter that plugs into your single phase home wiring and converts the single phase to three phase and the freezer plugs into the converter box.

I saw something about that, but I just don't know anything about electrical. I've googled and looked around and haven't found it. Is it something as simple as something like below, or more complex and need an electrician?

Can't as lot of 3 Phase motors also work on single phase? They just don't have the power they would on a 3 Phase system.

Eh, not really. A three phase motor intrinsically starts and runs in a specific direction based on the phase sequencing of the inputs (for example, to run a 3 phase motor in reverse it's as simple as swapping two of the phases... A with B, B with C, or C with A). They also don't require start capacitors to get going.

I suppose certain pieces of equipment could have additional power electronics that would allow for start and run on a single phase, but that's likely the exception and not the rule. I see nothing on the documentation for this equipment that single phase operation is supported.

Pretty certain you're correct. Talked with the auction folks today and they said the same thing. They actually take the plug off and just leave the three big wires and they said to just grab a 3 phase plug from Home Depot to put on it. He showed me the plugs they took off and they're odd, like RV type plugs that plug into a special outlet. He said a lot of the grocery stores that use these things have their own electrical setups like that. Not sure why, but they do. He said my grinder works fine. When I told him it was for residential he said I was crazy and could grind a whole cow in 10 minutes. Lol

Yeah, 3-phase service is standard in commercial/ industrial buildings but almost unheard of in residential. The plugs you're describing are common when dealing with 3-phase equipment. It's usually a twist-lock connector with a center ground pin, and concentric tabs around the center that carry phases A, B, C, and sometimes but not always the neutral.

For only $30,000 Coserv will bring 3-phase power to my house! They recommended a phase converter by electrician like some of you have recommended.

Sounds about right. Didn't want to burst your bubble but it would be very unusual to even have the utility infrastructure (buried or overhead) passing by your house to even deliver 3-phase service.

Random story, my parents house in Dallas (1955 build) actually does have 3-phase service. I couldn't believe it when I discovered that, but sure enough there are three separate phases visible strung up on the overhead poles in the alley behind their house and the smart meter is cleared labeled as 4-wire, 3-phase. Did a bit of research and apparently there was a narrow time range (mid 50s to mid 60s) when houses in the area were wired up with 3-phase to run central AC units (back when the earliest ones were 3-phase only). The setup is called a "high-leg delta" and it blew my mind when I read about it.

Just make sure you're not standing next to that when you tell your wife.
