We plan on having an outdoor fireplace at the outside corner of the back patio. We'll mount a TV on it. We're thinking gas start and wood burning. Is it possible to add a blower to a wood burning fireplace to help circulate the heat?

I have one on my fireplace in my living room so I am sure you can find one that will work outside as well.

Blower will be pretty worthless with even the slightest breeze. Do you have a way of enclosing the space around the fire place with those thick plastic roll-up walls you see at restaurant patios? If you don't, I'd leave off the blower.

yea... I'm not a huge fan of outdoor fireplaces as they just don't project the heat. I'd much rather have a good quality fire pit. But that's just me!

I have gone 3 different ways. The problem with a fireplace is the lack of actual heat and only a couple people can sit in front of it. I've had a built in fire pit that worked really well and could comfortably sit 6. With my current yard, I've have no place to put a built in pit so I bought a bonfire size solo stove and it sits on top of a 50 gallon barrel dolly and move it wherever I want. Kinda red neck-ish but it works really well depending on where we want to sit in the yard (My yard is all pool, deck and artificial turf).

So there's a couple different solutions but I don't think you'll enjoy any of them fully.

If you want just the ambiance of a fire and also spreading heat, you can buy a sealed fireplace insert that runs on gas and has logs. Usually installed in a living room but can be installed outside under cover. They sell fan blowers for those. I bought one for my indoor fireplace and it does an incredible job heating up the whole room. But its not an open firepit.

If you want to get the most heat out of a wood burning fireplace, I would recommend building a rocket mass heater. The problem with these are that they don't put out much visible flame because its meant to heat a room, not look pretty.

Your best bet is just to make an absolutely ginormous fireplace. Because you're only heating the room with the radiation of the flames and coals, you loose all the convection heat up the chimney.

Thanks, but we're 12 months out from having a need for them.
