3-ton 15 seer Rheem heat pump: 6780

18 seer var speed Bosch 7880

Fortunate to have a friend that owns A/C company, but just curious as to what everyone thought. Current 2003 model Rheem, 3-ton has a freon leak and is 19 yrs old, so thinking of adding some freon now, placing an order for a new unit. Don't want the unit to break and then due to supply lead time not be able to have one for weeks or something.

Doesn't sound like a friend at all. I replaced a 2.5 ton unit for $1400 last month with my friend who's family owns an A/C company. It's amazing what those company's make after material and labor cost.

Marco with Aire Cool installed a 5 ton Carrier heat pump system in our shop about a month ago for about $6,800. Single speed, 14 Seer.

Just got quotes from 2 Trane dealers...replace both units inside and out, plus plenum, pan, etc. Two ton for upstairs unit and three tons downstairs. Two stage units with 17 /18 Seer.

$28,000 or so from both. Gulp....

c'mon...what brand and did he charge you for labor? Was the unit used or refurb? You can barely get freon for $1400

I know you mean well by asking on here but be aware that everyone has an idea of what it should cost but very few are in business selling and installing it which means no matter what price you get it will be met with "that's too high".

You're friend may be a friend but he isn't going to install at a low profit margin, and it shouldn't be expected.

yes I totally get that. I'm not looking for my friend to give me a free lunch, and I am certainly willing to pay him. Using a friend for the trusted advice, but just thought I would see what others thought, do my homework a bit. Every city is different and unless you do this for a living you have no idea of prices...so I was just curious as to what others might have paid

5 ton R410 16 SEER Bryant/Carrier Condenser last Summer - paid $3,500

I ended up not replacing the coil/interior portion because the prior homeowner did them separate and everything was only 3-4 years old. The outdoor setup/condenser was damn near 20 years old!

Full replacement was quoted at $6,000

This was a year ago in SE Houston.

That is the whole problem with the post had he said I got a quote for an ac what do yall think

But he thru the friend quote probably unknowingly what that would cause

I do everything free for my friends or at actual cost if not

A exterior unit cost about 2000. An interior probably 2000
Hours to install 4 max That is why i said no friend

I lost a 30 year old Lennox last year in August at the height of the 100 degree string. Replacing both inside and outside with a 4 ton unit and the gas furnace was $10k.

Your Rheem price is fair and I believe your friend is charging you a fair rate. Stay away from the Bosch.

All these internet hero's on here claiming how cheap they get their AC work done have little to no clue the costs involved in running a company that has mandated licensing and insurance. I absolutely cannot stand "friends" (using that term very loosely) that expect me to come do their AC work for free or at cost because we are friends. A true friend wants you to be successful and knows that you have a lot of costs and wants you to do the job because he knows you'll do a good job. Period. You'd be spending the same money if you didn't use him and you wouldn't know the character of the other guy. Now having said that, my true "friends" that have used me get an invoice for less than quoted after I've made sure I've covered all my COSTS. Yes I can go buy a 4 ton system for $3500 but that's not my cost. My cost also includes my insurance, my license, my truck, the use of my credit/cash, my time etc.

My advice is to thank your friend for doing a good job and pay the guy what he charges. If he gives a discount be grateful, if he doesn't, be understanding.

Years ago my wife told me we had to make $10,000 a month to keep all our bills paid. We were a one man show at that time and we personally were poor as hell. We've grown a bit since then and so has that number.
Another note is if you want to have a good AC contractor be a good customer. We have the best customers in BCS. One customer brought me a case of Yuengling to my office today because they knew it was a favorite of mine and they loved the service we provided. He will def get moved up in the order when his AC breaks!

I'll leave you with this tidbit. When you're only shopping by price you only get what you pay for. Box for box I can compete with anyone, but you're not going to get the know how, the duct work, the new pad for the condenser, the extra this that was found during tear out etc for $3500 or whatever some of these ridiculous numbers people are throwing out. Air conditioning is way too involved to be taking the cheap way out.

Yes this for me is not about this one transaction. Willing to pay him so he isn't put out but just want the honest factor in the work. It's also the many number of times I call/text him and he immediately answers. He charged me $100 to add Freon the other day when my house wasn't cooling (have a leak hence why we are replacing). Told/have heard some places are charging more than that per gallon. In less than 24 hrs he had another unit with blown capacitor fixed. $100. Call anyone else - "can't get to you until next Wednesday". To consistently get taken care of in less than 24 hours from when I find a problem I consider that a friend. He has to pay bills too, but I get the best and immediate service.

Are you anti inverter system or anti Bosch and why
AgAcGuy12

Sounds like your friend is already giving you service for next to nothing. R22 is over $120/lb and R410a is over $50. Service call is $125 so you can compare to what he's charged you.

I'm anti Bosch because they are Made in China. I've seen brands like this come and go. Who's going to honor the warranty when you can't find parts? Stick to one of the big dogs that isn't going anywhere. Rheem FYI is a family owned company. No stockholders to answer to so to speak. Yes it is a Japanese family that owns them but they still understand quality.
Bosch looks very very similar to a Trane off brand that was made in China as well but the name slips me at the moment.
If you get an inverter get a surge protector installed on the condenser.

I called three AC guys to replace two units inside and out. I was expecting to pay over $20,000. The first guy never showed up and never called. The second guy told me to throw the ducted systems away and installed split systems in every room, and then never provide a price for that or called back. The third guy was a relative of a friend who called back and said he was too busy to do my house.

So, it sounds like the guy you got was better than mine. Want to switch?

Agree with your post 100%.

We have several rental properties. When we started, we would bid things but, like others have said, getting people to even return a call was difficult. Our first experience was adding central hvac to a 4plex - that's right - 4 new units. We had a couple of people tell us they weren't going to bid it - installation too hard in a 100 year old building. Fair enough, but why would we just call you for an easy job?

We landed on a company that has been fantastic. They have added/replaced 10+ units for us since 2015 & a new unit for our personal residence - and are currently pricing options on another unit for us. They didn't do the 4 at the 4-plex - that company sent out the son of one of the owners & he put his foot thru 2 different apartment ceilings that we had just renovated - but have had all of our work since then. Interesting tidbit: the reason we switched to them was one of their workers turned around & stopped to help Mr. Schwack on the side of the road. We weren't their customers - he didn't know us. I called the owner to thank him & that was that. They always go above & beyond - during that freeze, they went out as soon as they could safely travel to a property without heat & found a broken water pipe that they fixed for us since we couldn't get there.

They always come when needed. I would never question them on price - I am paying for their experience & amazing service.

Bingo.....

A crappy install job on a superior unit may not work as well as an excellent install job on a lower quality one...

I have a guy I use that isn't the cheapest around but I've never had to have any of his work redone. He troubleshooted an issue for me over the phone and saved me a service call for him to blow out the tube from the exhaust fan to the gas valve when the heater wouldn't come on.

I always enjoy these. Funny part is I believe the two main "heroes" are actual contractors and have some sense on costs.

Hey thanks for asking about my contact information. I am struggling mightily with releasing who I am on here and let me explain why.
1. We are plenty busy, (not bragging) and we are still a small company, we couldn't handle much more work hence why we do not advertise. We gain customers every week strictly from word of mouth.
2. I post on here to be informative to help posters be better educated without feeling obligated to use my services, maybe using what I say with your contractor makes him a better contractor and we all win?
3. I really don't want to be like those other guys on here that post their contact info on every single HVAC post yet never pay for an ad.
4. I'm still scared of ecozapp.
5. I can still call out the "doctor" for what he is.

Having said all of that what would you do if you were in my shoes? Do you respect my opinions more because I don't have a sells pitch to go with it? Should I just bite the bullet and let it be known who I am and let what happens happen?
