My five year old Toro conked out and it seems like a huge PITA to take it somewhere and wait for repairs so I am going to buy a new mower and have been eyeballing the cordless rechargeable ones. If anyone owns one and can give me a review of rechargeable vs gas I would appreciate it. I assume they are much quieter than gas powered and it would be nice not having to store gas cans in the garage. My concern is the durability of the batteries and whether they weaken over time and the amount of use from a full charge . I don't plan to spend more than $500 and right now am considering the 80v Kobalt as I have the weed whacker that uses the same battery. If you have one let me know what you think.

I had an Ego push mower and I liked it well enough to buy my 80 year old father the same brand but self propelled. (They're heavy though)

It broke at 11 months and they said it would be 8 weeks (minimum) to repair.

I tossed it out and bought a cheap Ryobi.

****ty customer service, which is a shame.

I thought briefly about going back to gas now that I have a shed, but the battery is just a simpler option.

Makita Lawnmower

I have seem really good reviews on this mower. It even comes with 2 extra batteries right now. I am a big Makita fan.. Their tools are really stout and the batteries work on the tool and outdoor tool platforms. I got the blower recently. It works great. My next purchase will be the cordless trimmer, then the mower after my gas one dies.

Up until late 2018 I had a Black & Decker. Served my small lot in Richardson well, but not so good on 1/3 of an acre with an old battery. So we went with an EGO. It's been great so far, have the weedeater/edger too. I still can't do the entire yard on one battery charge but with 2 batteries and a fast charger that doesn't matter.

If you live in D/FW area you can have the B&D. It just needs a new battery. (Gotta replace them every 4-5 years).

You serious about the B&D? Which one is it? I just closed on our house in McKinney and the yard isn't very big. I'd take it off your hands

Black and Decker batteries suck, I have a weed eater/edger that I really like for its simplicity but I have had to replace the rechargeable battery twice.

I have the cheapest non self propelled Ryobi and have been very surprised at how completely satisfied I have been. Works great. Maybe a little weak on mulching power, but powers through heavy grass with no bogging down. Doubt I would go back to gas.

Would recommend!

I have the EGO trimmer and blower and have been very happy with them and will probably expand to the edger soon.

I had it in my mind that when my (very old) craftsman mower died I would go get the EGO mower. Well my mower finally bit the dust a couple of weeks ago. I did a bit more research and couldn't get myself to pay the extra $$ for the EGO over the Riyobi.

Are the cordless mowers powerful enough to mulch? I hate raking leaves.

I've had the EGO 21" Self-Propelled Mower for 2 years now, but I bought it used from a neighbor, so I don't actually know exactly how old it is. I also have the EGO 15" String Trimmer, the EGO 530 CFM Blower, and the EGO Hedge Trimmer. I started with just the string trimmer, and then kept adding on as I've enjoyed each additional piece of equipment.

In accumulating all of those tools, I have two 2.5 AH batteries (one is 6 years old and one is 2 years old) and one 7.5 AH battery (came used with the mower--at least 3 years old, but I don't really know). I live on a quarter acre in Far North Dallas. I can pop the 7.5 AH battery in the mower, mow my yard, move the same battery to my string trimmer, edge my yard, and move the same battery to the blower, and clear my sidewalks/driveway all without recharging, and the battery indicator still flashes green when I'm done. Takes me about an hour in total (30 minutes mowing, 20 minutes edging, 5 minutes blowing + swapping equipment time). I really only ever use the 2.5 AH batteries for hedge trimming or one-off tasks, as they are lighter and more convenient for short projects.

The mower came with a mulching attachment, bag attachment, or just normal blow it out the side attachment. I use the mulching one, and it does a good job on the leaves that fall in my yard (mostly pecan tree leaves).

The last time I did research, EGO generally came out top ranked across all the battery tool platforms. You'll be better off sticking with one battery platform, so choose wisely. If you already have the Kobalt string trimmer, then I'd look at reviews of the Kobalt mower option. The batteries are the most expensive part, so you definitely want to minimize how many you need to purchase.

I have had an 80v Kobalt for a little over 2 years, and I really like it.

I also have the Ego mower, blower, and the tool with multi-attachments (line trimmer, edger, chainsaw).

Pretty much, I'm pleased with all of them. We have 3 batteries, I think all 5.0 AH. We just had one replaced by Ego for free & no questions asked based on our report that it was too fast to discharge. It was barely still under warranty.

Some Pros:
  • Nice to not smell like gasoline after usage
  • 3 batteries is enough to do nearly anything that I want.
  • Have had the Ego mower for approx 5 years. Still going strong (no repair issues).

Some Cons:
  • Mower just isn't fast enough to pick up leaves (Texas Live Oak) sufficiently.
  • Blower is fine for small jobs, but to pick up those Texas Live Oak leaves in the spring requires a gasoline blower (need more power and longer duration). For this, I use a Husqvarna backpack type blower.
  • The edger is kind of unwieldy (a little too long and not balanced very well). Needs to be operated by a good-size/strength person for best results.

Yep. The only reason I still have it is that I didn't want to set it on the curb for the scavengers and was considering parting it out. Let me check the model, find the key, plug the charger in, etc. Hang tight for a bit.

Model is CM1936 Type 2. I still need to locate the key and the charger. Maybe if your yard is small enough (and the battery has any life left in it) you wouldn't need to buy a replacement battery. It looks as if they are still available.

If you look at Ego, I highly suggest you check out Greenworks Pro. I have the 80volt and it's been awesome.

Love Makita stuff. If you are already on the makita platform, this is a no-brainer.

Found the charger, still looking for the key. It's around somewhere. I'll plug it up tomorrow and see what happens.

Dang a 5 year mower crapped out on you? Did you ever change the oil?! That seems pretty young for a mower.

Mower height on that makita is apparently a max of ~3"

How high are you going? The Makita is designed to adjust the motor according to the load, so high grass shouldn't be an issue.

On my Makita brushless saws, you can tell the saw is adjusting for the load. It's pretty cool.

I bought it today and tested it. I was pleased with the result but it is going to take some getting used to as it handles so much differently than a gas mower. The startup is awesome with just a push of a button. I love how quiet it is and now I wont feel bad mowing at 9 AM.

I've got a greenworks 60v that works great. I can get 2-3 mows per charge depending how much you use the walk assist. The same battery also powersmy weedeater and blower.
