Do any of you have any clue what it would cost to remove and replace tile in a 23x13 room? I am looking at a house where this may need to be done and I have no clue.

Jack hammer with a chisel? Do some of the demo yourself and save some $$?

Hire it all out. I dont know how to remove but I doubt a jackhammer would be a good.idea.

My sons and I just removed three bathrooms of tile in our house and saved $1500. Buying the tile from a distributor $700 and paying a sub that I know $700 so for $1400 new tile. The problem is we are now remodeling three bathrooms so it's gonna cost a lot more..

When I was looking at a lot of tile to be removed I was quoted 2.50-3.50 a sq/ft. That was just to remove it and to chip the thinset off. If your going to do wood floors and need to relevel the floor that's not included.

So you're looking at 800-1100. Usually the removal fee is a flat fee so smaller spaces don't give you a discount.

Replacing the tile costs will depend on what type of tile and how tight the grout lines you're demanding. If your going to do a wood look tile, the tiles themselves are cheap but it'll cost like 4-5 a sq ft to install because people demand so tight of grout lines. (Make sure you buy rectified tile if you're doing this).

If you're going to do the traditional large format tile, it'll be about 3-4 a sq foot to buy and install.

So total tile replacement can cost around 6-9 a sq/ft.

I'll second the removal cost.

When we moved 3 years ago, we installed wood over carpet. Asked about doing all wood downstairs and removing tile. Price was $2.50/ sq.ft.

That was just removal. Did not include leveling.

It looks like that's only for vinyl tile.

Jack hammers come in many sizes. A smaller demolition hammer with a wide chisel bit would probably pull up porcelain or ceramic tiles pretty quick. These are for smaller jobs like tile, not rocks or slabs.

Something like this in hammer mode. https://www.harborfreight.com/1-18-in-SDS-Variable-Speed-Pro-Rotary-Hammer-Kit-64288.html?ccdenc=eyJjb2RlIjoiMzk1NzcxMjAiLCJza3UiOiI2NDI4OCIsImlzIjoiNzkuOTkiLCJwcm9kdWN0X2lk%0D%0AIjoiMTI5MjgifQ%3D%3D%0D%0A&cid=paid_google|||64288&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=&utm_content=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwnv71BRCOARIsAIkxW9H7jijQrUeykf3UfhxUQMiE0efa8jeqXgPBnGwmS6r7kGGz_A3TWUcaAs5iEALw_wcB

Looks like a job I'd be happy to pay someone to do.

Wombat, you're in Houston right? I've still got all the tools from when I did it to my house. My dad and I rigged up a dust mitigation system as well. It mitigated the dust well, but was far from perfectly keeping the dust contained.

I'd be interested in doing the demo work. 23x13 sounds like a one day job.

If your job needs to be truly dustless, reach out to DustRam. They have patented tools that do an incredible job at dust removal. If you're doing this with a wife and kids at the house, I wouldn't go with anyone else.

If we end up buying the house, I'll let you know.

Looks like I grabbed the wrong one. I know you can rent tools to get it off the floor.

100%

We had issues with our prior home and our builder had to replace all of the tile under warranty (approx 800 sqft). The whole job took 2 weeks with more than half of that being demo and cleanup. They used an air chisel for most and hammer & chisel for smaller areas. The mess was horrendous - dust and mortar/tile chips everywhere. I think it took them two days to clean everything and we were still finding dust and debris throughout the house weeks later.

On a related note, we had to demo and rebuild a shower stall just before we sold the house. My dad found a crew working a remodel at a local bank and we hired them after 5pm to do the work. Not one of them spoke English. They showed up at about 6pm every day for a week and did the entire job for like $500 in cash when all of the commercial companies were quoting 5x that figure. Their work was beautiful and they kept our bathroom clean as a whistle during the entire job.

Makes an awful mess, I did my own my demo on a small bathroom once, but most likely never again. You do save money but it's back breaking work especially if you are officially old army.

We just contracted to replace the balance of our downstairs tile (1,500 sq ft). We opted for a dustless removal; I can let you know in a few weeks if it's worth the added expense. To my wife, I'm sure it will be and you know what they say about happy wives.
