Can anyone point me in the direction of where to learn about mosquito control systems? The little research I've been able to do indicates that this is going to be expensive enough without paying someone to do the labor for me.

Specifically, I'm interested in automated systems that spray the yard and around the house for me. A neighbor has one with tubes running all around his house and fence. Is there anything that can piggyback on my sprinkler system?

might I suggest some mosquito pods?

About $5-10k cheaper to install.

Spartan Mosquito eradicator worked for me last year.

$50 a year total cost. Follow directions carefully.

If the consensus around here is it is snake oil then ok. Worked for my small suburban lot last year.

Same here...started using Spartan about 3 years ago when they first came out. Before, we could never go outside without spraying down with Deets and had numerous mosquito sprays available. Still have numerous available as we haven't needed them since we discovered the Spartan product.

We have a creek behind us and a neighbor that has numerous containers that are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Not a problem anymore thanks to the Spartan Mosquito Eradicator product. I purchase 5 for my yard and even supply several of the neighbors when I make my purchase, We're all happy and enjoying out outdoors!

+1 for Spartans. I'm on year three with them and have been very pleased. You have to put them out soon

To Gary79's point, I have 2 bottles of deet in the garage I don't think I touched last year.

My next door neighbor has a very shady and soggy back yard (see downstream post about side yard drainage), and he told me they did not have a problem with mosquitos last year. My Spartans cover him.

Is it too late to start mosquito control?

How many Spartans do most of you all use? I have about .4 acre lot.

Do I need to put them in front and back if I am only concerned about backyard?

It's not too late as I need to get some to put out as well... haven't been tout to get mine due to this dang CV.

They come 2 in a box that provides coverage for up to 1 acre, so one box is all you'll need.

Yes, put 1 in the front yard and the other in the back yard for your lot size.

How To Use Spartan Mosquito Eradicators

Quote:

Instructions

1) Prepare the Eradicators

Remove Spartan Mosquito Eradicators from the box.

For each Eradicator, remove the temporary white cap and fill with WARM water to the fill line indicated on the back of the Eradicator.

Replace the white cap. SHAKE THOROUGHLY. Remove the white cap.

Attach hooks to black caps for hanging, and secure black caps to the top of the Spartan Mosquito Eradicators.

2) Hang the Eradicators

Hang Spartan Mosquito Eradicators along the perimeter/property line of the area to be protected, no more than 180 feet apart. If the property is smaller than one square acre, and there are no major mosquito attractors such as a wooded area or a water feature, hang the Eradicators on opposite corners of the property.

Be sure to hang the Eradicators away from areas where people gather, since mosquitoes will gather near the Spartan Mosquito Eradicators to feed.

If you have woods, heavy vegetation, or a water feature that attracts mosquitoes, you should hang at least one Spartan Mosquito Eradicator near or within that area, away from people.

The ideal height to hang the Spartan Mosquito Eradicator is about six feet above the ground.

The ideal place to hang Spartan Mosquito Eradicators is in a tree against the trunk on a sturdy branch, or just inside a bush, where they will be shaded and be partially protected from rain. This prevents evaporation and allows some water replenishment from rain.

3) Results

With proper placement, the mosquito population in the area will diminish by 95% in 15 days or less.

Do you all buy the full season pack? I kind of want to since cheaper but obviously would stink if it didn't perform well....

I put one box of 2 out late April and replace with new box of 2 about 90 days later. Covers the season pretty much.

Yeah, but I get mine from our local Feed Store for about $3 less/box and when I use 3 boxes and I purchase about 10 more boxes for surrounding neighbors, it adds up to a nice savings!

Last year it was $5/box less...

How long does it take for this Spartan thing to work? I hung up four around my half-acre about a week ago and was swarmed all day today.

I hate to say it, but I don't think they work. I was an early adopter and did not see a difference.

I used the Spartan for a couple of years. There may have been some impact, but all in all, I thought it was pretty minimal help. I think one key factor is you need to get them up super early in the spring/late winter. That said, I did that and still wasnt impressed

Bifen on the other hand got **** done

There is a chart in the box on how long it should take. Seems like a couple of weeks. Make sure you add water at the proper temperature and hang them in the right location in the tree or shrub. I use filtered or bottled water just to make sure I don't unintentionally impact the intended mixture. They have worked for me so far, but I am careful to follow all the instructions and tips I read in the reviews.

important other tips include securing them with something better than the cheap plastic hooks, keeping the water level between the lines, etc.

good luck.

Looks like Spartan now has a new product they are pushing on Facebook.Haven't looked at it on their website, but did see that it is only 30 days vs 90 days.

I have a Dynatrap that is great. It is an indiscriminate killer so all flying insects are targeted but it works phenomenally. I had the Spartan set-up last year with the dynatrap and I forgot about the Spartan after the 90 days of life and never saw an increase in mosquitoes, or biting gnats, which are our real problem.

The Spartan thing is natural. It's sugar, yeast, and salt.

Spartan still the best?

My pest control guy sells In2Care, so was looking at their stuff when found this thread.
