I normally do not have issues with walls, but recently have come across a problem in two different areas I repaired on ceilings. We had a little water penetration in the attic which I fixed and dried out. One of the areas was probably an 8-10" circle. I cut away the skin and knifed out anything that wasn't stable.

I applied a 1/8th layer of this stuff, and let it dry. I checked 5 hours later, didn't seem to be very dry, so I waited 24 hrs and then sanded, wiped clean, and painted.

After I did this, I started noticing the paint was cracking, which made me wonder if it the spackle compound wasn't dry and now it was drying more, causing the paint to crack.

I went back over the entire area sanding, and applying a 3M lighter spackle.

The same cracking appeared again, so I'm perplexed if it is the paint I'm using or what. It was an older can, but I mixed it back up and it was very smooth and seemed like new when I applied 9/2018.

Did you prime area before you painted?

Prime with...paint?

No.

I've painted the wall numerous times over spackle and always have done 1-2 layers of paint without issue. Why would the ceiling behave differently?

Not sure but just wondering if the sheet rock dried out thoroughly as it appears the issue is related to moisture from what I can tell by the way it's cracking/peeling, etc. Thought primer might have helped to seal the sheet rock properly before the texture was applied.

Just my 2 cents...

How long did the product sit before painting? It appears to be shrinkage cracks. According to DAP's Product Data Sheet multiple applications are recommended to achieve 1/8" thickness. If the product was applied at 1/8" in one application I image it would take some time before the product was ready to paint. The compound may be dry on the surface but I bet it still curing at the sheetrock interface.

I waited 24+ hrs for the DAP. Maybe similar for the 3M. I'll try one more time.
