Our upstairs guest/kids bathroom has what sounds like air coming from the drain. I can't hear it under the sink but when I plug the drain and the overflow hole, it stops.

Any ideas on what is causing this??

i bet your a/c drain ties into the line. probably means there is a blockage somewhere.

i'd get that drain line cleaned out.

Just draino or something more?

definitely not draino. just use a 50-50 mix of bleach and warm water, just a couple cups worth. i'd pour that in the cleanout in the attic, then maybe the next day flush it with a little more warm water. see if the gurgling goes away after that.

Yep, had the exact same problem a couple years ago. This was the culprit.

usually you can undo that elbow piece and take out the AC grime.

How is that kind of tie in acceptable? Everything I've ever dealt with, albeit commercial, has kept condensate and sanitary lines separate.

It's common practice and has been for a long time for attic based condensers. House I grew up in it tied into a bathtub vent (early 1970's construction). I've only seen it completely separate in a wall mounted evaporator in a condo I had in CS. Home I owned in Beeville, the evaporator wain in the garage and tied into the washer drain.

My home was built in 2013 and has that same set up. Unit is in the attic above the bathroom.

Our home has the AC drain tied into the toilet vent pipe. In the summertime when you're sitting on the pot doing your business you can hear the gurgling between the walls.

Not supposed to tie the condensate line to a vent anymore (this is my understanding, could be wrong., but that's the way mine is set up as well. Attic unit tied to my kitchen sink vent. Damn thing wasn't tied in properly and leaked all in my wall.

Condensate is supposed to go directly to a drain or outside from my understanding, but I'm not an AC guy. That's just what my googling discovered when I was considering relocating it after I had the leak.

If it just recently started, see if the p trap at the indoor unit is dry. The condensate drain ties into the drain pan at the coil where there is air flow. If the trap is dry, air comes thru the trap, down the condensate line, and out the sink. Sometimes you'll get a whiff of drain funk where the air leaking out carries the stank of the drain into which it's tied.

Neighbor has a horizontal unit in his attic with a running/belly trap on the condensate line. It doesn't work worth a ****, and you could hear the stopper rattling all the way downstairs.

San Antonio, for example, has an ordinance requiring all condensate lines to be connected and taken to a single point. It still ties into sanitary, but there is a belief behind the ordinance (Ha!) that this will make it easier in the future to reclaim the water.

In the rest of the non-communist world, we still take it to tail pieces, mop sinks, floor drains, etc. where it ties into sanitary.

So the sink set up was exactly like this, however, they sealed the hose to the PVC and I couldn't get it off without cutting. Went into the attic and poured the 50/50 bleach water and it has stopped this morning.

Thanks for the help

is the white elbow part also glued in? That part gets full of AC goo that needs to be cleaned out as well.

That sink won't drain quickly when it gets time to clean it out.

The white elbow part is the p-trap, which shouldn't be glued, and he definitely should remove it and clean it as well...

Like this?

Well, it's only one but don't break thru the walls or you'll find the others...
