Can we talk toilets?

We moved into a newly constructed house this past summer, and one thing that drives me nuts are the toilets. They clog ridiculously easy. The toilets in our old house (10 year old toilets) were much more effective at doing what they're supposed to do. The current toilets are labeled Pro Flow 1.1-1.6 gpf. They are not dual flush, so I don't really know what the actual flow rate is. From what I've read, these are cheap builder-grade crap. I'm planning on replacing them soon.

I see a lot of praise for the Kohler Cimarron and the Toto Drake. I was hoping to see if anyone had any recommendations on these 2 units, or any other toilets I haven't mentioned. I think the Cimarron has a taller seat, so I'm leaning toward that one at the moment. They offer the toilet in a 1.28 gpf and a 1.6 gpf configuration. I don't understand the reasoning for having 2 different flow rate toilets, and I'm assuming the 1.6 gpf is the way to go.

Any suggestions?

Most class five toilets (large flush valves/ fast tank evacuation to the bowl) should flush fine. Some are flappers, some, such as the Kohler are a tube/ barrel style that raises and lowers. I haven't had any issues with the Kohler class five toilets in the jobs where we've installed them in.

I just installed an American Standard low flush toilet in a bathroom remodel and it works great. No problem with plugging yet and the anti skid mark feature they brag about really seems to work. I bought it at Home Depot.

I remodeled my house 10 years ago. I put an American Standard Cadet III 1.6 gpf in the master bath because 1) my wife liked the way it looked and 2) because it cost $103 at HD. In 10 years that toilet has never clogged and never even hesitated. Family of 5. I think that thing would flush a football if I threw it in there.

We've had a Toto Drake in the kid's bathroom for about 10 years. Overall it's performed well. In the master bath budget was more of an issue so we went with American Standard Dual Flush Right Height from HD. I don't recall the model but we haven't had any issues with it.

American Standard Cadet in pink, blue or green or GTFO!!! 3-5 gallons will power down even the worst of Taco Bell binges.

More serious answer - we installed a Toto Aquia and like it. It's dual flush and somehow never manages to clog. Unfortunately, not available in any of the colors mentioned above. It costs a lot less if you buy online than trying to find one in a store.

Looks like a muppet deuced in there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give American Standards a look (video is impressive). I sure do like the price of them better. The Cimarrons are hell for expensive for a toilet. I have 3 to replace, which I'll probably do one at a time to ease the pain.

It's ridiculous to me that I have to replace brand new toilets in a brand new house to get the performance I'm used to. I wish we would have known to ask about what was being installed during the construction phase and upgrade at that time. Live and learn, but given the environmental standards out there now, I'd recommend to anyone looking into it if you're building a house.

Texas requires 1.28 gpf or less. 1.6gpf is no longer legal.

just FYI

Good to know. Makes sense now why Home Depot had no 1.6 toilets. Thanks for the info!

Installed Toto Drake in master bath about a year ago and it has been great.

I've installed both a Kohler Cimarron and an American Standard of some kind (can't remember the specific model) in the last year. They both work fine, but I like the fit and finish of the Kohler better. I'll probably choose Kohler when I swap out the third toilet.

I installed the Cimarron 1.6 about 2 years ago. So far so good. I don't like the shape much & it is in a very small bath that guest use. I am going to renovate my other 2 baths so I will probably move the Cimarron & get a better looking (ha) toilet for the small bath. As for the shape-it just seems not in proportion. The tank is small & the bowl is large & very "thick" at the front of the toilet. How did I get the 1.6? I tried to order online from faucet direct. They took my order but then cancelled it about 2 days later. I researched to find the product numbers for the bowl & tank separately. I ordered the tank from HD online & then I picked up the bowl at Fergusons in Grapevine.

So, just to satisfy my curiosity, vendors won't even ship 1.6 gpf models to Texas addresses?

Mostly. If it's a dual flush toilet, the average of two small flushes + one big one cannot exceed 1.28 and the big flush by itself can't be more than 1.6 gallons.

In my experience some vendors will ship the 1.6 & some will not.

Toto is Japanese made and the Japanese have had water restrictions much longer than in the US so their toilets were always considered more efficient than when the US manufactures starting having to limit water usage. Now that water limiting toilets have been around for a while, the US manufacturers have caught up tp Toto.

I've been looking at new toilets.

Current front runners:

Kohler Santa Rosa
Am Std Champion 4

Both get really good marks.

The Kohler is a 1.24 but still gets good grades on taking care of business.

Also, while the seat dimesions of the Kohler are more or less the same as the Am Std, the overall toilet is more compact.

We've used the Am Std Cadet in our current house and the one previously. That's five toilets and I haven't managed to clog one of them yet. Would recommend them to anyone looking at dual flush options.

We've installed Toto at our house. You can buy the 1.6 GPF through Amazon

So far all I've seen is recommendations on flushing capability - which is, of course, very importatnt...
But, would add the following:
If you are a big person and a male for sure, get a toilet with an elongated bowl and one that has a high lip...
The difference is fantastic in many ways

I thought the elongated bowl was a given!

Toto Drake is a solid choice. Had good success with Gerber Avalanche. HD sells Gerber but not the avalanche; might find it a plumbing supply house.
