Trimming palm trees

So this house we just moved into has Mexican fan palms, Queen Anne palms and what I am calling a pineapple palm (it looks like a big peinapple sitting on the ground).

There is a lot of old "fur" around the trees. When I went to Florida, they keep their palms trimmed down to a hard smooth surface on the trunk

How do I acheive that look on the Mexican fan and the Queen Ann palms? I plan to keep the pineapple palms looking like just that.

Any good guides to palms would be appreciated. I have never owned them and now have a forest of mature palms in my yard.

The ones sitting on the ground are called sago palms. Do you have dogs? Sago palms are extremely poisonous to them.

Hire a crew to come clean them up. The number of roaches that hide in that fur is disturbing.

It's also a huge fire hazard. (Ask me how I know...)

If they are truly Mexican fan palms, my advise would be to cut your losses and have them removed before they get taller and more expensive to remove. Just be sure they aren't windmill palms which actually have value. If you do want a clean cut look, you can do it with a razor knife by cutting around the base of the old dead fronds. I did this to mine (before I had it removed). There are a lot of You Tube videos showing how. It is a ton of work though. You will also need to routinely prune to keep a beard from forming (when all the dead fronds hand down). As mentioned, the beard will harbor bats, mice, rates, roaches and other nasty things.

I did the more, or less the same thing on my one surviving queen palm (they don't do well when the temp drops below 20), although I used a small saw. There are probably You Tube videos on this too, but I just winged it because I didn't really care if I killed it. On a side note, I replaced the remainder of our queen palms with Medjool's which are more cold hardy and a bit nicer looking.

OP, could the "pineapple" palm be a Canary Island date palm (see pic 1)? We have one of those, four silver date palms, and a couple of pindo palms. I just use a reciprocating saw to trim the branches like pic 2.

Potcake, that is what they are in the first picture. We have 3 of those in our front yard. They are UUUUGE.

Thanks for the tip.

Word of warning, both Canary Islands and silver date palms have massive spines near the base of the branches. Be VERY careful with them. I have gotten stuck a few times and the pain and swelling lasted a few days. The tips of the leaves are pretty damn sharp also.
