How long do you want to ignore this user?
How old were you when you first started tinkering, building, fixing, etc.?
Unless Legos count, In high school I ended up with a car because my grandpa died and no one else wanted a green '78 Delta 88 with over 200K miles and a bad transmission and I wound up with it. If the car didn't run I had to take the bus and it took an hour to get around to my part of the county. That's pretty good motivation to keep the POS alive.

First thing you ever tried/had to fix, re-do, remodel, paint, improve?
Either one of two things... A year after I moved in to my first place I got an eskimo dog named Snowy. My parents had a crate left over from when they had two dobermans so Snowy has a cage that's a lot bigger than what he needs and his paws easily fit through the bars. I left it against a wall in the living room, went to work and came home to a big gouged out area in the drywall where he decided to dig into it.

Or, in the same house the kitchen light quit for the same money I could either buy a new ballast and keep the crappy fluorescent light, or buy something that wasn't ugly. I went with option 2.

Best HI/DIY thing you've ever done?
Probably designing and rebuilding 1/3 of our house nearly from scratch.
Kitchen, Family, Living Room Before/After

Biggest HI/DIY disaster you've ever had?
Not caused by me: Idiot roofing contractors not following the contract when reroofing a craftsman we own, causing the roof structure to collapse. Caused by me: snapping off a bolt flush with one of the cylinder heads on my car, then having to fab up a tool to drill the thing out.

HI/DIY activity you really love doing?
Finish work is great - installing hardwood, stone or tile. It goes fast and there's an obvious difference at the end of the day.

HI/DIY activity you really hate doing?
Drywall. It takes forever and there's always something I missed.

I learned most of what I know about HI/DIY from ______?
Somehow I figured out all of this from experience, Google, and the John Bridge forums. If something doesn't feel right go figure out what you're doing wrong.

You reach the Pearly Gates and St Peter says you'll be assigned to a trade crew to help keep up the place. For better or worse, since you're pretty good at it, we're gonna put you in _____ .
Stonework, as long as they've got a good wet saw.

What's your preferred jam while HI ensues?
I listen to trance and progressive and the occasional drum n' bass. Give me a 2 hour set from Markus Schulz, Solarstone, or Armin and I'm happy.

Favorite burger joint and usual order?
It's a tossup between a couple of local places - Triangle Char and Bar or Moe's Tavern. At Triangle I always get The Nap - a cheeseburger with grilled cheese/bacon sandwiches instead of a bun.

How do you like your steak cooked?
I'm good with medium - give me a better cut instead of something huge.

HD or Lowe's
Amazon or build.com? Lowes for consumables, HD for supplies, Southern Lumber and Millwork for specialty stuff and online for everything else.

What state would you reside in if you weren't able to live in Texas?
I live in Charleston, SC, but miss the PNW. Mrs. Fife hated it there so maybe Colorado.

Favorite/least favorite beer?
Favorite - either RJ Rockers (Brown Eyed Squirrel), Terrapin (Liquid Bliss). If I had to pick something available in TX I'd go with Goliad (Presidio la Bahia).

Drink of choice?
Not beer? Probably something random like Big Red. What can I say, I grew up an hour from San Antonio and that stuff goes with everything.

Current project?
Either the baby, to be induced May 5th if not already here by then or the master bedroom / bathroom remodel project.

Next project?
Rebuilding our house the idiot roofers screwed up once the state and National Park Service approve of the plans. Or put in a tankless water heater. What could possibly go wrong?

How many JCI chili cheese dogs can you eat in one sitting?
Right now probably 3 or 4, I'm starving!

Preferred city for getting crunk?
Right here where I know everybody and downtown is 5 minutes away. My crowd in San Antonio and Seattle all have kids now and would probably need to be home by 9 anyway.

Origin of user name?
Wish I knew but I'm not even sure any more. Something that sounded good at the time but not so much now?

Current hometown?
Charleston, SC. Actual Charleston inside the loop, not some lame suburb.

Original hometown?
The closest city was either San Marcos or Hunter, TX.

Occupation?
Engineering group lead for a large aerospace company.

You just got a monster bonus from work which includes two additional weeks off and $20,000 in gift cards to blue or orange. What do you do with it?
Boring answer: I'd be a whole lot closer to finishing the master bathroom + have enough cash left over to swap out our fridge for Thermador columns and have fronts that match our cabinets built. I could probably also put A/C in the garage since we already have the equipment and I know a guy.

Bonus: Pictures of Mrs. Fife since I took too long.
Our last anniversary at The Biltmore.

7 mos. Pregnant

Our crappy roof, I already have to plastidip it with tar every other spring around the plumbing stacks anyway.

It's a backhanded compliment of sorts.

Oh, well yeah of course. There's a reason why there aren't any pictures I'm in there sullying up now. Engineers are late bloomers so I saved all my fun for after graduation.

Glad to know that you and I could agree on music whilst working.

Although I do admit to thinking that listening to 70's classic rock while running home runs in the rafters a bit 'time erasing' (aka, don't notice the time and get done faster).

I like my 90s pop jams, but my husband doesn't typically let me do that. Lol

I had a pretty good'90s alt/ one hit wonder playlist but Mrs. Fife left a glass of water next to the Macbook and the cat knocked it over. Still haven't restored all my music from the hard drive yet.

Speaking of Mrs. Fife, we're at the hospital right now because her water broke. I guessed the baby would be due 12 days early but it looks like 2 weeks was the correct answer.

Still waiting around. The kid will be here today though. Things are going fine. Just sort of hanging out for the time being.

I did this yesterday. My mom used it, cousins did, second cousins, my brother and I, and now ours will. First coat of paint in decades, easily.

They gave me a spinal first (csection) which didn't work, so then they gave me an epidural. I couldn't feel below my boobs for about a day because I had so much anesthetic in me.

Just wait till the pains really hit and kick it, then she'll do some talking, screaming, cussing, etc! And you'll be topic numero uno on her **** list, expecially since the house is not completed yet!

B-o-r-e-d. This is taking a long time. She's perfectly comfortable though so there's that at least. I suppose she'll stay the night and come home tomorrow if everything is normal?

FWIW we're coming home to finished flooring so there's an additional thing to celebrate.

Be glad it is going easy and not like mine.

But our little guy came 2 weeks early, which was good. Her actual doctor was on call that weekend (labor day), so at least a friendly face in the hospital while discussion c-section vs. emergency c-section vs. will-it-come-normal due to abruption.

If you make it to the 'tine one day, I can hook you up with some mp3's. Bring about 60 GB of HDD and I'll copy over mine to yours. I think I have most 80's and 90's one hits, as well as just about everything else you might think of that's random.

Congrats man. I'll be in same spot in about 3.5 weeks. I'm currently trying to convince the wife to let me dig and install a French drain for yard before baby comes...

Not to bum you out but my first one took 16 hours and my second which came 6 weeks ago took 17 hours. Mrs Seven is a trooper. Best of luck and post some pics!

He's already been there at least 20 hours. I hope not much longer if not already. That has to be super stressful. Mine was planned (off by a but on time due to complications) and I was a tired wreck. Can't imagine being in labor that long.

Sorry for the late reply, between everything going on yesterday and calling parents/aunts/cousins I was a little busy.

The proudest member of the FTAC of 2038 got here at 5:20 after a little over 2 hours of "push" time. We went with Joseph since it's a multi-generational name on my mom's side (skipped mine). I thought babies came out a funny color but he looked just fine. Pictures were taken at about 2 minutes old.

Flooring guys were able to do their thing too.

Here's a couple of pics

Very nice!

The light blue wall makes me wonder. Was that supposed to be your nursery?
The Fife
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's a left over color from our last house actually. The master bedroom was somewhere between mint and forest green so we had to do something about it. When we moved I painted some drywall scraps with the colors were used at that house and wrote the paint codes on the back so we could use them here if we wanted. The bedroom here was somewhere between light purple and beige so I reused bedroom blue and also used it in the family room which was Barney purple.

The blue wall will have grasscloth wallpaper. Things will make more sense with the bedroom put back together. The nursery is the same shade of white we've used everywhere else for now, it was bright orange before. I'll grab a pic once we bring the baby home later.

This is the master bedroom FWIW, added in 03 with the family room. The other bedrooms are from the original 1959 build and are pretty small by today's standards.

Yikes! I feel like bright orange would be really bad.

I pass through there a few times each year but half of them are a layover at IAH. When we take I-10 instead of I-20 it puts us there around midday though.

Have HDD, will travel!

It was... the color was more of a super bright sherbert than anything else. Their other kid's bedroom was (is still) painted breen. That's the one they removed about 18" and the bedroom closet from so they could make a hallway.

They were classy enough to leave behind a bunch of trash bags, take fixtures and an appliance like I wouldn't notice any of it during the final walkthrough. That made closing extra fun since it had to be done by COB that day (short sale with multiple banks) and it was around 3:30 in the afternoon.
