It's been about a year and a half in the making but the kitchen/family room/formal living and entry hall project is finally complete. The thread that followed it from design to completion is here, and there are plenty of ugly pictures from rebuilding everything in the middle of the process over there. In a nutshell it was completely rebuilt from the crawlspace up.
http://texags.com/forums/61/topics/2324990

Now that this is finally done I plan on taking a 2-3 month break while I make plans for rebuilding the master bedroom/closets/bathroom and a half bath that are all in the same area of the house. I also plan on having the main panel replaced soon because it is undersized for the overall vision I have of the place. That will not be a DIY adventure.

If there are any questions about what/where/how much/why... I'll be happy to answer.

The big stuff:
20K for Cabinets
16K for appliances
10K for flooring
6.7K for countertops
4K for lighting
3.6K for wall removal and raising the ceiling
2.8K for crawlspace and HVAC dehumidifiers
2.4K on new joist lumber and hangers
2K for drywall
2K for insulation
1.9K for the pantry doors
1.2K on plywood
1.1K for the fan
750 on doors
700 for wallpaper (ordered enough to do this + a bathroom)
550 for the backsplash

Throw in another 3K for supplies and things under $500.

A bit over $75K for everything

Very awesome job. You're style is too modern for me, still an amazing transformation none the less.

How long did it take from beginning to end?

More or less 18 months. I started in July of last year but work basically came to a stop for a while because I was slowed down for a while waiting for the framing crew to come and remove the wall and raise the ceiling. I also spent May of last year on the formal living room.

This was a much bigger and more extensive than any project I've done before. It's also the first one I've done since moving to this area and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out where to source materials from in a new city. We should have had a firmer design before starting. There is a lot less opportunity for changing things up as we go so that should really help out the upcoming bedroom/bathroom project.

I'm with Seven and don't like the modern style for MY HOME but I can appreciate the work and personal attachment you have with it. You did a great work and saw it through to completion...great job!

You have done an amazing job of tying modern style to a traditional ranch home!

Awesome job. I look at the old kitchen cabinets and I want to laugh. Looks so old Texas Ranch style, like something my uncle would have. And now......it is NOT too contemporary for me.

Wow, that looks awesome! good work. I think what's even more impressive than the actual project (which is pretty amazing) is the 18 months bit. My 4 month bathroom remodel nearly killed my wife and I, so I am baffled by the tenacity and fortitude this project had to have taken. Also congrats on finishing and now getting to rest and enjoy it.

and I second the part about having a firm plan ahead of time, as experience has taught, the longer it drags on and the more mid project planning you do, the more "great" ideas you can have...

I was talking to the wife about it yesterday and there were two huge things that slowed down the project. One was waiting for framers for about 3 months.I was still able to work on other things in the meantime but it went a lot slower. The other problem was not knowing who sells what or where to get materials. Finding the hardwood took a while, and then finding a good company to finish it the way we wanted to took even more. Same thing for a cabinet builder.

For the next project I won't need any labor other than my own, and since we're starting with a firmer design I can do whatever homework I need ahead of time. We're struggling with the layout of the master bathroom and closet space right now... there will probably be a thread about it after the start of the new year.

It's slate - I bought it from Vermont Slate Depot. It was under $240 shipped. Very easy weekend project to do.

I see you renovated the pup into a cat. How much did that run?

Great job on the home!

The pantry doors came from the Sliding Door Company. http://www.slidingdoorco.com There was about a 10 week lead time and they were by far the easiest place to deal wtih that I talked to. We may go with them again, depending on how we plan on doing the closet doors for the master bedroom.

I have no clue why the dog wasn't in any of the after pictures, he's like a shadow. He sheds a lot but it forces us to stay on top of keeping the place clean at least.
