To preface, I own a pool service company.

I have seen MANY DIY pools in my time in business. I can think of 1 that's not a nightmare. Putting aside the general lack of pool knowledge you may possess, because I won't argue most builders would actually possess more than you, you will be your subs bottom priority. They know the check they get from you is the only one they will ever be getting, so you will always be the bottom priority when it comes to schedule, resources, attention to detail, and quality materials. Just my 2 cents as someone who has been around pools every day for a decade.

I would hope you would be the exception, but I would say the outlook would be grim.

If so, they probably committed suicide in the process, so they wont be around to respond. Was bad enough having some else do it.

Did this once before. Contractor ended up in jail for drugs before he was finished. I finished it for him and it was all good. Not to bad but that was about 20 years ago. Just looking for ideas and suggestions.

A cowrorker had his own guy dig the hole then had the pool contractor come in after that. I know he saved a good amount doing that.

Good morning. I'm a pool builder and am happy to give advice/ guidance if needed.
In my opinion, your level of success will greatly depend on where you are and the quality of subs in your market.
There happen to be quite a few good subs in our market, however they are all very busy and less likely to work direct to clients.

Feel free to call me and I'll do my best to help in any way i can.

Good luck!

MPyhton43,

We live in Austin (Riverplace/Steiner Ranch area) and are currently looking at getting a pool done. I was curious if you could recommend any companies to steer clear from and/or be sure to contact. We are probably looking at lower end pool only type setup, so nothing too crazy. Thanks for any advice.

I'm a pool builder in Amarillo. Do a ton of research. I've seen 1diy pool and it was awful If you are not ready to be there 100% of the time, subs will not show up or will not provide the quality you would expect. Having and experienced builder there to call the bluff of the subs would be much less stressful. Just last week I walked on a job and the coping was off by 1/4" in 12". That doesn't sound like much, but it got pulled that afternoon and redone. ask yourself if you really would be able to hold everyone accountable for everything they do.
