I am fine with the cabinet layout, but the doors, hardware, etc. are 60 year old and are in rough shape.

how much would it cost to have someone put new cabinet doors and sand / repaint?

average sized 1950's kitchen in a 3/2.

is the current cabinetry also painted or is it stained wood? If you wanted to save money, you could do the stripping/sanding of the framing yourself and get someone to build the doors.
The door construction is where your cost will be - not sure you want to pay that same person to do sanding/stripping. Just a thought.

Not sure where you live, but if you are in the Austin area I can hook you up with someone who does great cabinetry work. Done about 4 projects for me.

Don't call HD on this one. The price tag will give you a heart attack.

We have a friend who spent $10k for cabinet refacing from Home Depot. We spent $7,500 to get all new cabinets.

I was going to ask about this. We are wanting to redo our kitchen but not sure if we simply want to repaint the cabinets, or reface or replace. I had heard the refacing can cost almost as much something new. Our cabinets are old (house built in '84), and they are pretty beat up. If I am going to all the trouble and expense of adding new countertops, backsplash, flooring, etc, I am kind of leery of simply repainting the cabinets.

For a cheaper option you might look at that rust oleum refinish stuff. Someone had a thread about here

We ordered Kraftmaid from HD when they had a 20% off sale. Took 7 weeks for them to come on a big truck.

Rustoleum for the win. Definitely cheaper. Looks great. Just a crap load of work. We did ours in a weekend. Had to work hard to do it.

You could try a DIY approach. Apply a thin veneer of oak or birch, which they sell at McCoy's. It can be painted or stained. You can order new doors and drawers online at places like Rockler's

If you want painted, you can buy doors online to fit your openings.

Degloss the existing finish (chemical deglosser), prime, sand smooth and paint the cabinets.

Order doors from Barkerdoor.com or similar and paint them yourself.

We updated our kitchen this way. It is a bit of work, but cost way less than 10k and made a world of difference.

My trim guy ordered the doors for our cabinets from Evans Cabinets and Doors in Brenham, Texas. Google their website for more info.

I took the doors& hardware off mine, sanded & repainted.

2 coats of primer + 2 coats of good quality paint made a huge difference; but as you can see they weren't going to get much worse.
