Looking for something to mount above a workbench. I'm not a big fan of pegboard because it always seems to sag, break, crack, and otherwise fall apart. I saw a sheet metal version on Amazon, but some of the reviews said it had a tendancy to bow and sag a bit. A friend of mine lined his garage with the Gladiator wall track stuff from Lowe's, but that gets expensive in a hurry. I even thought of just mounting a piece of plywood on the wall and screwing things into it. Anyone used anything else? Even thought of using a number of the medium sized screw/assorted junk organizers with the smaller drawers.

I built a rectangular frame out of 1x2 and attached it to the wall and then the pegboard to that.

I haven't had any sagging and it's been up at least 10 years.

I've never used pegboard myself, but how does it sag?

I've had pegboard in my garage for 6 years now, no signs of sagging, and it's loaded down with tools.

I mounted it on a 2x2 frame that had its rails attached to the studs in the wall.

It is close to impossible for pegboard to "sag."

Maybe it can flex or bow. And that could cause cracking. But that is SO avoidable with just a bit of bracing. I don't see why pegboard, properly mounted and not subject to weather, couldn't last 50 years.

Slatwall.

I don't have any problems with my pegboard sagging. It is mounted on the wall studs of my garage. My only problem is with the hooks coming out and dropping into to dark, hard-to-reach crevices when I take a tool off of it.

Sag wasn't the right word. I'm probably stuck on the stuff my dad had in a storage room years ago. I do have concerns about hooks falling out and holes getting wallered out.

To clarify my answer a bit, I think slatwall is the most cosmetically appealing option. Gladiator is the best known, but there are a lot of competitors like flowwall, etc who offer cheaper alternatives. The best option is to check craigslist, anytime a new store is built or goes out of business, they end up with sheets of slatwall that get sold off for cheap. Then you just need to find generic hooks and accessories that will fit.
