Has anyone rented a carpet cleaning machine? I am looking to clean 3 rooms, and need to use something that doesn't have harmful chemicals since I will have an infant crawling around. Any suggestions?

Get the machine and just use hot water
Or call chem dry to come do it. They don't use chemicals I believe. Even though their name implies it

you could even mix just a tad of oxiclean into the hot water solution if you wanted.

and yes, Rug Doctor at any grocery store.

I would recommend renting a unit from Ace Hardware. They hold more water than the grocery store models, they have a heating element to keep the water hot, clean up easier & have greater suction in my experience. I've had much greater experience with these machines over rug doctor.

IMO. We own a bissel for spot clean up. works great for maintaining. But it's worth the $$ to have a pro come out every 6-8 months. Stanley steemer, chem clean or any local will do better that the machines, and it's usually reasonably priced. Stanley did our last clean for $99 for 2 rooms. This includes moving any furniture. ( except electronics) takes tem about 2 hrs and they are done.

Rug doctor from Kroger worked just fine for me.

I much prefer the big green Bissel carpet cleaners that Lowe's has over Rug Doctors. The Bissels actually have brushes that scrub the carpet. There's also a rental coupon on bissels website.

In the past 35 years we have used them ALL as well as quarterly pro cleaning...the more you clean your carpets the more dirty they will become! All are coated with some kind of dirt/stain repellent and that eventually gets washed off with the cleanings.

I finally had to resort to using a hot water variety and the hot water I used had dissolved Cascade in it(relax the carpet people told me to try it), then strained out. The rugs all looked great for a few weeks then got the dead, dirty flat look again.

If I had it to do over again, we wouldn't have worn shoes inside the house. We rarely even snacked any place but the kitchen and dining rooms so spills weren't the issue it was tracked in messes.
