Afternoon Garage Heat

Our house faces west and the afternoon sun heats the garage to something unbearable. It's honestly cooler to stand outside directly in the sun than to walk into our garage that hasn't been opened all day. Have any of you had this issue and were you able to do something to alleviate the increased temperature in the afternoons? I've thought about getting some of that pink insulation stuff and putting it on the inside of the doors, but I'm not sure how effective that is.

We have a clear heat barrier on the windows of the guest room that faces that direction, and you can't even tell there's sun out there or that the film is on it, but the garage is a different story.

Our garage door is insulated and we have a small mounted window type A/C unit in there. I live in Phoenix and our garage faces west as well. I would assume our garage would get hotter than yours just based on geographic locations but we are able to work in there all summer long with the A/C unit on. Just dont open the garage door and lose all the cool air you've been fighting to keep.

Also, our garage is insulated in the walls and above.

My garage faces the east, but I had a similar problem. By mid morning, the garage was like a sauna. I applied a DIY insulation from Reflectix. For a easy project and not much money, it seems to have cut the temp down significantly. There are also styrofoam kits you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes as well. Check that out if you want quick and easy and the AC route isn't for you.

This...

Just added AC to our garage (ran a vent off the normal AC and close it when not in there) and opening the door even just for a minute really kills off any benefits...

Luckily I have Tekshield in the garage and it makes a huge difference. Is your garage open (no ceiling) so that you could put up some type of radiant barrier?

They make a special garage door insulation. It pops in the panels after being cut to length. Works pretty well. I bet the have one with radiant barrier. Not expensive or hard.

Mine gets hot but mostly b/c of roof heat. I keep the door open a few inches and it really helps the ventilation in there.

I'm no expert, but isn't this potentially hazardous. It allows car exhaust and possibly other fumes to enter your house.

We insulated our garage door, and it still gets really, really hot inside. We have a room above the garage which becomes rather unbearable because of this. The insulation seems to help in the winter though.

Thanks for the suggestions. The garage does have a ceiling with insulation and no room above it. I've tried cracking the door, but it doesn't seem to help that much. How much do the panels cost? I'm guessing HD or Lowes would have them.

Mine does the same thing and faces basically north. I think it might be the exterior walls are taking a direct shot of the afternoon sun and may not be insulated.

I want to put the foil radiant barrier in the attic, but no way am I going to do it in this heat.

Speaking as an inspector, yes adding a vent from the central system to garage is considered a problem/hazard and is not recommended. I see it fairly often though and people generally seem to like it more than be concerned. Still i would remove it before putting your house on the market.

Also, if you are building around DFW. Keep in mind that they NEVER insulate the garage unless you pay extra for it and supervise to make sure it gets done. It is not required. I would definitely recommend it as an upgrade. Heck just go to the house and do it before they sheetrock. It is stupid that they do not insulate that area.
