All I can say is to seal the grout; otherwise it will discolor and get very dirty!

My hint is to use a darker color.

(Hubby does all the tile work).

I didn't do it, but my tile guy did. Used a dremel tool, messy but didn't take him very long.

Let the grout cure for 2-3 days (even though it will look dry in 1) before sealing it. I agree use a darker grout if possible...I have a lighter grout out of necessity for our look. Isn't too bad, but a pain to keep clean in the edges/corners.

Use a dremel tool and go slow, not a hard job just time consuming. Non sanded grout is easier to keep clean than sanded, but only works on smaller joints.

Darker is not always better. White mineral build up looks just as bad and is hard to fight as well.

As said the process is pretty simple. Dremel or scrape old stuff out - there are various tools made for this available at HD. Clean up dust. Trowel in new grout. if it is non sanded you can even buy it pre mixed in a container.

Do you guys recommend the pre-mixed over the mix yourself? Is there any real difference other than reducing "operator error"?

Actually, I recommend Spectralock Epoxy grout instead of premix or regular mix-yourself. If you follow the instructions, it's pretty foolproof, the only drawback is the limited working/cleaning time and that you have to get it pretty much spotlessly clean when cleaning or you'll never get it all off the face of the tile.

For removing the grout, don't use a dremel, use a Fein Multimaster or equivalent. The flat blades will make removing the grout SUPER easy.

I would just use the pre-mixed.

for a small amount like a shower i would just pay more for premixed.
