I got zero issue with Koivun being here. Spaun withdrew from East Lake with an injury and wasn't exactly lightning it up until he comes from nowhere and wins last week. Bridgeman also won last week in Asheville so he should be in form. I though Gerard had earned a spot and was snubbed.
This whole 4-somes thing is baffling. With all the data available, how can you not figure it out?
My theory is that foursomes is easiest when you can have two players that are really similar, and we've got a bunch of great players that have different skill profiles. It's not a great excuse against the internationals, but the Euros have guys they ride in foursomes Rory, Rahm, Fleetwood, Aberg, Hovland or going back in time Sergio, Westwood, Stenson. Tee to green they are all similar, nobody is overly short, no approach play weaknesses. Would seem easy to pair up.
It's why I think the Xander/Cantlay pairing worked well before they both took a step back in their form. Tee to green very similar and really good, and to me that has to be really comfortable. Everybody else besides Scottie just has something that is a weakness tee to green, they're either short, inaccurate off the tee or just mediocre approach players. They have strengths that make up for that weakness over a 72 hole marathon, but in an 18 hole sprint hitting every other shot, it's hard to pair up.
I'd really like to see Cam Young with Scottie tomorrow afternoon just as a test, there's no point in seeing Burns and Scottie again, they're like 1-5 in the format at this point it doesn't work. And yeah I'd go Xander and Cantlay again too. Can't even think of another pairing that I like after that. I guess I don't hate Morikawa and Clark, I'm a ride or die JT fan, but I have no interest in seeing him in foursomes.
