Over $2.1MM in career earnings, hundreds of professional starts on the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour (back when it was Nationwide).

Personally I'm not a big fan of these reinstatements.

Maybe he'll join the LSU golf team.

Colt Knost is tryring to regain his amateur status so he can be eligible to become the captain for the Walker Cup.

However, looks like his application has been suspended while the USGA reviews their guidelines.

There's got to be better guidelines for that. I saw somewhere he had 300+ starts in pro tournaments, and multiple wins.

I get some leniency if you have a couple tournaments, and never won. You tried and didn't make it. 300 starts is 6 full years of playing every weekend.

My hunch is that most/all future Sr & Mid-Am champions will be professionals.

It happened at last year's Mid-Am and it has happened previously at the Sr Am. I know a pro who won the Sr Am. Great guy, but he's not an amateur. He played & won on multiple professional tours.

Golf has always had a path to regain a player's amateur status. This in not new for golf.

They've changed the rules the last couple years and now re-looking at them because of that outcome.

Always?? Hardly. It wasn't even considered until the 70's and it was rare until the last decade or so.

Now, it's so common that six of the eight quarterfinalists at this year's Mid-Am & two of the last three US Sr Am winners were pros. And a 33 yr old Irish pro has played in the last two Walker Cups.

And these guys probably wax eloquently about the integrity and honor of the game. Bobby Jones is rolling over in his grave.

"Always" was an overstatement but I think that path pre-dates the 1970s.
I had no idea former pros were playing in amateur tournaments in those numbers. Glad the USGA is considering changes.

The most ridiculous aspect is the Mid-Am was created for true amateurs because college players with plans to turn pro were (and still are) dominating the Amateur. The whole reason it exists is for the man with a non-golf career and is specifically intended to exclude not just pros but future pros. The Mid-Am was to be the most true amateur event. Letting former pros in defeats the whole purpose.

Saying there was a path back very much overstates the past. The current state is not remotely comparable

Its really pathetic that guys are going in as re-instated Ams to the Mid-Am. As others have said the mid-am is supposed to be for people who have fulltime jobs, let alone the professional status. These guys see this as an opportunity to play against what they think will be an easier field to get some wins and try to backdoor their way into the Masters and US Open.

They won't be able to compete at the US Am for the most part because thats dominated by the highest level college players.

I hope Stu Hagestad gets to be captain, but he'll probably still be playing as the team's mid-am another 10 years ha

Hagestad is a pro. He's a trust fund baby who literally plays golf for a living. His only goal is to make the walker cup and play/win the mid am. He doesn't need the money that turning pro would provide and his investment banker role is (taking his +7 handicap to exclusive clubs with clients).

I'm not hating on the guy because if I had his ticket I would cash it as well, but he's not exactly what the mid am was made for either. IMO the mid am was for guys who have to work for a living and get to play golf on the side. Not golf for a living.

Sorry for the random rant, don't take that as me directing it at you, just wanted to vent a little.

I agree with you. The concept of the professional amateur wasn't what they built the Mid Am for.

Golf being mostly for rich kids has been a thing for a long time. Back in the heyday of amateur golf a lot of "amateurs" were doing the same thing.

Overall I think it's the exception. And I see a big difference between trust fund baby being an amateur for life and someone like Colt Knost being reinstated.
The Milkman

Exactly. Being a rich kid with a cushy job is much more in line with the Mid Am than Colt Knost, Justin Huber or Mike Sposa.

Any serious mid am competitor isn't going to have a "real job," it's all salesmen who can spend their workday on the course with clients.
TheRatt87

It's really simple. Hagestad and any other player who has never renounced his amateur status and declared his professional status is an amateur. Any player that has renounced his amateur status and declared himself a professional is, and always will be, a professional.

There should be no reinstatement of amateur status. Period. Every player that ever declared their professional status fully understood that they were permanently renouncing their amateur status.

But now that they found out they weren't good enough, or are no longer good enough, they want to backtrack. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. Or it shouldn't.

But when you have the current USGA President saying this, it's no wonder things are so screwed up - "I have many friends that are reinstated amateurs that have come through the mid-amateur game... Is the game better with those reinstated professionals back in the amateur game, in a reinstated way? I think the answer is yes."

New fried egg podcast with Colt Knost on discussing amateur status. Only about halfway through but Colt's position so far is the USGA's case-by-case review is ridiculous and there needs to be bright line rules (no disagreement from me). Sounds like he would create a waiting period depending upon how high you rose in professional golf and how long you stayed there. I get that to a degree but think there should be a line where amateur status is no longer available.

He also says he has no real interest in the mid-am but wants an opportunity to play other am events, particularly those played at Pine Valley, Seminole, etc. Essentially says he's only in it for fun.

While understandable, my retort would be he's already had more fun in golf than virtually anyone. He's lived a life most can only dream of, has access to just about any club he wants, probably has every major person in golf on speed dial and that's still not enough. He also wants some am's spot in these events. What would literally be a once in a lifetime event for an Am is just another weekend to fill out his calendar between covering the Masters and playing the member-member at Whisper Rock. So far, he doesn't seem to get this, but still have another 20 minutes to go. Seems a little tone deaf to me.

It's fine for him to want all that. It's just not any kind of injustice for him to be ineligible for it. Colt had the option to go the Stu Hagestead route and be a career amateur but he didn't.

I like Colt and don't begrudge him wanting to get to play events at Pine Valley and Seminole. But like you said it comes across as very entitled and tone deaf.

Cry me a f'ing river, dude.

Agree with him that there need to be some rules and not this case by case crap. Agree with you that there should be a point where you are a former professional golfer, not an amateur.

I'll admit, I'm a little more sympathetic to his cause after listening to the whole thing yesterday and understand where he's coming from, but at the end of the day, I just don't think granting someone like him status back to AM level is in the spirit of the event. Now someone who played in college and tried it for a couple of years but flamed out on the Latin American tour or KFT I would be ok with, provided there was some kind of waiting period for 5 years or so after they have retired.

He brought up the guy who this thread was started about and knows him well. He's been out of pro golf for 20 years and working for Callaway. Make sure you listen to the end for the Ken Tanigawa story!

Here's an idea.

However long you were a pro, you have to wait that long to be eligible. 1:1 for every year on the PGA, six months for every year you were on the KFT, 3 months for every year you were on a mini tour.

Wait that time and pay back all the winnings you received.
TheRatt87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Here's a better idea - if you think you will ever want to play in premier amateur events, never turn pro. You can still play in 3 of the 4 majors and almost every PGA tour event if you are good enough - through qualifying or invite.

The whole reinstatement discussion is ridiculous. It's like having sex and then regretting it & crying that everyone won't consider you a virgin.
Enrico Pallazzo
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Agree. We operate in a world now where everyone thinks their own happiness is above all and they should be owed something. My bright line would be quite clear -> if you earn FT status on any of the recognized professional tours or feeder tours, you are a pro and a pro for good.

I should add that I like Colt and understand why he thinks this way. I just hope the USGA doesn't agree. He owes basically everything in his life to his pro career. Zero chance he would be in broadcasting if he hadn't made the tour. Pro golf has provided him a life that most can only dream of. And I don't begrudge him that because he earned it. He just shouldn't be able to go live an Am's dream life as well.

And there's also the irony that he gave up his Am spot in the Masters because the couldn't wait to turn pro and start cashing checks. He's just not a good poster boy for this cause.

True story:

This weekend was my city's Sr championship. Winner was on pga tour for a few years with his best finish a T-6 and various other top 25s over the course of a few years. He's 51 now with am status.

Super nice dude. He got me by two shots after day 1 (he shot 67) and then I had a cold putter on day 2 and finished T4, 6 back.

Definitely hits it good. Some were peeved he was even there but what else is he gonna do if he likes to compete?

Enjoyable day, we shared a cart so I was there for every pre shot routine and post shot commentary. I hit some better shots than he did, watched him hit one bad ones too. It wasn't overwhelming by any stretch and I enjoyed it.

Not a USGA level event so I know it's diff but a fun weekend.
