I really don't understand the emphasis on targetting "major markets". Its not like other sports in that if its LA and NY in the world series it'll get better ratings. If a tournament is taking place in Chicago that doesn't impact if its going to get more attention than one in Rochester. And in the in person fans are such a tiny fraction of the value, but regardless tickets sell if its an important event.

If the best players are there, TV viewers and fans will follow.

That being said I think the Championship series events should rotate

The in-person fans that are walking around the course are a tiny fraction of the value. But the real money maker (for on site stuff) is the suites that big companies pay for. In a larger market, there are larger corporations that can pay more for those suites than smaller markets.

Would be a bummer if Houston doesn't get a champions level event, how does the 4th largest city not get one when they're trying to focus on larger markets?

Personal opinion/guessing only but I would think current sponsor and course issues make Houston not tremendously attractive - despite the market size - when compared to other bidders.

I will be curious to see what Crane will decide to do with the tournament if it is relegated to the Challenger series of events. Gonna make it harder to sell sponsorships and get fans out. TCH is only on as the title sponsor through the end of 2028.
