Here is my rough draft of what 2028 could look like. The Olympics definitely throws a wrench into the schedule:

February 3 - 6th: Waste Management (Phoenix)
February 10 - 13th: Pebble Beach Pro-Am
February 17 - 20th: Genesis Invitational (Los Angeles)
March 2 - 5th: Arnold Palmer Invitational (Orlando)
March 9 - 12th: Cadillac Championship (Miami)
March 16 - 19th: The Players Championship
March 30 - April 2nd: Texas Event (San Antonio)
April 6 - 9th: Masters
April 13 - 16th: RBC Heritage (Hilton Head)
April 27 - 30th: Colonial (Fort Worth)
May 4 - 7th: Truist Championship (Charlotte)
May 11 - 14th: New Event (Seattle)
May 18 - 21st: PGA Championship (San Francisco)
June 1 - 4th: The Memorial
June 8 - 11th: New Event (Philadelphia)
June 15 - 18th: US Open (New York)
June 29 - July 2nd: Travelers (Hartford)
July 6 - 9th: Canadian Open
July 19 - 29th: Olympics (Los Angeles)
August 3 - 6th: Open Championship
August 17 - 20th: New/Playoff Event (Boston)
August 23 - 27th: Tour Championship (Denver?)
December 1 - 3rd: Presidents Cup (Australia)

The bolded events are all but set in stone. Colonial has hosted a tournament every year since 1946, and with it's ties to Hogan, I just can't see it falling off the championship schedule. San Antonio started hosting tournaments since 1922 but has missed several years in between...but they'll need a primer for The Masters and luckily, the tour is limited with the weather on who could host the week before Augusta.

Byron nelson likely in that spot 2 weeks after masters. They have sponsor that wants it and has deep pockets.

Good news on the Byron but they are gonna have to find a new DFW course for a Tier 1 Tour event IMO..

Waste Management has only met the purse threshold once so it's likely relegated to the minors. Thunderbirds will have to decide if it's worth it and how it might affect their charitable mission. Maybe it doesn't matter though given the number of non golf fans that attend.

There's a negative 4000% chance that isn't on the upper track

losing the Amex in palm springs will be a blow to that area and I'm in the camp of zero chance WMO isn't a championship event
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

Yeah, the WMO draws eyeballs and attention that many other tournaments don't. It's also basically a Super Bowl weekend staple and its personality fits that profile. As far as purse challenges go, I'm sure they can manage and I'd also say that anything you do Super Bowl weekend will have trouble competing for sponsor dollars. But this one is in shape to compete for those $$$s as well as any. And again, location is key; just going to play yet another Cali event? Nah.

You hit the nail on the head. Will be curious to see how the sponsor ship part plays out

I would guess they'll tie sponsorship of the Champion series to the Challenger series.

As in, if you want to sponsor a big Champ event, we need you to give us money for some Challenger Events too.

And being the 2nd or 3rd most popular state side tournament

Rumor that Riviera doesn't want to host a tournament every year. See how that plays out.

I'm just telling you what the conversation has been locally and what a couple of guys connected to the Thunderbirds have said.

I don't think it would affect attendance much either way.

You think they'll get the same number of patrons when the best player out there is Doug Ghim?

I doubt 80% of the crowd can name one PGAT player. That percentage might be low.

There is a lot of noise in San Diego continuing to host oga events. Talks about moving an event to August or September ilo January.

Sentry has taken over and a $20m purse

Yes the opening event that was in Maui will now be at Torrey Pines, at least for next year.

You may have better intel than me but the sports talk shows in Phoenix this week are speculating WM won't double their sponsorship and it won't be a Championship event.

I have zero intel. I just think there's no chance the tour gives up their most popular tour event.

In addition to the match play tour championship at actual golf courses instead of East Lake, I am thrilled with them cutting sponsor exemptions. I'm sure the likes of Finau and Homa aren't happy but there's a real simple solution.

Be glad its at least that good. With the Scottish next week followed by The Open im surprised that many name guys are playing, especially Gotterup.

Plus just came off a major and a signature event. Only the ones really needing to grind points and $$$ are there.

Every week can't be a barnburner. Sometimes you play the Cleveland Browns or the Oakland As or The Citadel.

I'm just basing my posts on what I'm hearing locally.

I doubt most people that go watch golf or care about golf. I was the guest of some rich guys last February and not one person out of about 50 ever sat in the seats we had and that includes me. I didn't watch one golf shot but I was there from 9:30 until 5.

I wonder if you'll start to see dual sponsors to keep certain tournaments on the champions tour? "The Waste Management brought to you by UPS" or something along those lines.

It's still a big golf tournament at its core. It's naive to think there will be no different whether Scottie Scheffler or Hank Lebioda show up.

I just don't think the tour with a ton of sponsors and a few billion of fresh capital invested is going to lose their biggest event over WM not wanting to pay $10 mil more for the purse.

Why doesn't the Korn Ferry come to Phoenix?

I live in DFW and would not put any weight behind what I hear on The Ticket (local radio)

I do not think it will be the same if it's 2nd level but I think a lot of people travel here from cold places and don't care who plays. I know I don't get out in town during that week.

PGAT will move to a match play event for the Tour Championship in 2028.

The Champion Series will conclude with crowning a season-long champ with a regular event for the top90.

After that, the top 32 will compete in a match play event (across two weeks) for its Tour Championship. First week will be round round robin, group stage. The following week will be the final 16.

With the timing around Super Bowl and everything else I think the tournament will still draw the crowds even if its second tier. Maybe not as many, but I'd bet damn close. Hell, besides die hard PGAT fans people aren't even paying attention to this new structure. People go to the waste management to party. plain and simple. Not to watch golf on some historic course or anything like that. The tournament is a love/hate for many of the players, I'd best most of the players would be happy it wouldn't be a signature event that way they could skip all the nonsense that comes with playing in it.

NOT A FAN of them putting Denver as a market they are targeting. Historically that means Castle Pines Golf Club with the International played there for 20 years and then the BMW held there in 2024.

Castle Pines Golf Club is in my neighborhood, and it is a logistical nightmare for us. Odd fact in 2024 Si Woo Kim rented out my house for the BMW Championship 2 months before I moved in.

Rumored updates that I don't think are publicly announced:

Riviera out (sucks - I think the membership killed it)
San Antonio didn't bid
Houston bid and got rejected
Nelson and Colonial both submitted good bids and waiting to hear

Sahallee getting an event starting in the 2nd year

Would be a bummer if Houston doesn't get a champions level event, how does the 4th largest city not get one when they're trying to focus on larger markets?
