I played a round with some of my buddies over the weekend. I was up a stroke going into 18.. pulled my drive left into a hazard. My buddy pipes his drive down the middle. As we're working our way up to the fairway my friend starts chirping me a little.

I'm hitting 3 from 255 out and hit the best 5 wood of my life to four feet. Rattled my buddy so much that he duffed his second and third shot. I ended up birdie-ing anyway and won the match.

Got me thinking cause I realized that was probably the most clutch shot I'd ever hit.

What are y'all's most memorable/most clutch shots you ever pulled out?

Hit 3 wood on the par 4 18th at Prestwick to the back of the green to finish birdie/birdie. The 18th green is about 20 feet from the front of the clubhouse so a bunch of people are watching groups come in

A few chip ins on the final hole to win matches

8th shootout hole (3rd time playing the 18th in the final match) alternate shot in the member guest in 2020 with a huge gallery, my partner left me a 6ft downhill right to left three cup break putt.

Drained it.

Sherril Park years ago. Was playing one of the "hole 9"s against a buddy in match play format. I can't remember which 9 we played and it's the only time I've played the course and we only payed 9 holes. Anyways, I had had a bad drive and had to really step onto my 2nd shot to reach the green. Pulled that one quite a bit and had a very tough up and down to make par and not lose the hole (my buddy had a good shot at birdie so I knew he was pretty much locked in for par).
My chip had to get on from pretty far off and I had no green to work with, I can't remember the specifics but I could not hit a high shot for some reason, maybe a tree. So I had to bump and run a chip into a mound left of the green to have it slow down and get onto the green. Got up and down to half the hole.

September 16, 2010. Twin Peaks Golf Course in Longmont, CO. 9th hole (my 18th).

I'd been trying to break 90 for a long time. I could play about 15 holes of bogey golf pretty consistently, but I'd blow up something on the last few holes to kill my chances.

I finally had a decent round going all the way through 17 holes. I was intentionally not tracking my score, but deep down I knew I had a chance. Hit a TERRIBLE drive that went behind some trees on the left side of the fairway. I was in jail and had to punch out. Hit it short of the green. I chipped on and hit it a little past the hole. Like I said I didn't know for sure what I needed to make for an 89, but I knew.

The way I remember it, it was about an 8' putt, downhill, really quick, with about a foot of break in it.

Reality is that it was probably a relatively flat three-and-a-half footer on a slow green that was left half of the cup. As I stood over it, it felt very difficult.

Hit a very pure stroke and it was never in doubt. Dead center of the cup. Added them up and it was indeed my first ever 89.

One of my better shots happens a couple weeks ago. Was playing a match against a newer friend I've come to know. On the 18th hole I'm down 1 shot (stroke play). This hole is a par 5 with water all down the right and trees on the left. We both hit decent drives in the fairway. From 220 out I hit a hard 3 hybrid to 7 feet for an eagle. Friend hit his long and right and had a had to get up and down from the rough. Was lucky he didn't end up in the water. I two putted for birdie and he didn't get up and down as he was feeling the pressure lol. Match ended all square which usually doesn't happen on stroke play.

Member Guest, last hole of the flight's last match. We needed to win the match to win our flight.

Opposing team hits to 30 feet on a par 3, and I missed the green 35 feet left.
I knew I had to make my next shot but, i bladed it over the green. I half assed the 50 foot chip and made it for par.

The opposing team tried to lag putt but left it 7 feet short, missed the par putt and we won the flight.

High school. Junior year. Playing number 1 spot. On the tee box of 18 on the last day of district. A guy on the team playing 5 spot was done and walked back to me as I waited to tee off. He asked my score and I told him. I asked where we stood.

He smiled an awkward way as he debated what to say.

Then he said, "you have to birdie"

We didn't say anything else. It was on.

Nailed the drive and was left with the choice to go for the long par 5 in two or not.

It was basically an island, water right and short, steep slope left and long to OB

I decided to leave myself a 100 yrd shot that would make or break our season

Pitched the third to about 10 feet and made the putt in front of the entire crowd

That is my most clutch moment in golf

I hit my 5-wood anywhere from 90-255. It's a skill, I know.

Enjoying the stories...keep them coming. I don't play enough golf in competitive situations to have stories like these, but a "clutch" shot in a general sense for me is an ability to drive a ball into the fairway a modest 225 on cue. That's not far, of course, and I can go longer, but the success ratio hits a cliff when I get too far out over my skis. Otherwise I'm at like 95%.

I'll tell you what wasn't the clutchest….

First chance to ever break 80. Needed to get up and down for par on 18. And…..I chunked the ever living **** out of my chip and hit it two inches.

We used to have an annual club match play tournament. One of those that takes place over the summer/early fall where you have a window of 2-3 weeks to schedule your match with your opponent. I won it twice, coming to the par-4 18th hole 1-up both times. Nothing more satisfying than hitting two good shots when you know you have to.

Won our Sr Club Championship twice in the last 3 years. Same feeling when you know, standing on the tee, that two solid shots and a couple of putts will get it done.

I've hit un-clutch shots too.

Every Father's Day, I play in a 2 man scramble with my Dad in his small hometown in Arkansas.

Couple years ago, we're tied at the top of our flight going into day 2. We get to the last hole (a par 5) and we're 1 shot back of the ole boys we're playing with.

We're laying 2 on the fringe and they're laying 3 about 8 foot from the hole. My Dad, being the antithesis of clutch, leaves the 70 footer about 20 foot short.

I stepped up and drained it to put the pressure on the other team. They made the first putt no problem and we split the money.

I can't remember a time when I think my Pops was that proud of me.

The post-round beers sure went down nice that evening.

This is kinda relevant to tomorrow's game. My golf bag has Astro and Aggie head covers in it.

I was a member at Cimarron Hills in Georgetown, and years ago we were in a match play league with other clubs in the Austin area. This particular match was at U T Golf Club, so I'm proudly sporting our colors.

I'm down one with 2 to play, and my tsip opponent is getting chirpy. 17 is a par 4 with a steep grassy fall off on the left side. The pin was left and I short sided myself in ankle deep bermuda about 6 feet off the green, and 15 feet from the hole. The tsip was about 30 feet away, putting for birdie. Not looking good. I hit a full swing open flop shot to a foot and he got a little flustered and 3 jacked, so we're even heading to 18.

18 was a long ass par 4 close to 500 hundred yards, with a light bulb shaped green, creek down the left side, with the bottom portion of the green about a 30 ft radius lowered front area where the pin was. We both hit solid drives, and I'm about 240 out on an uphill approach. I smoked, pured a hybrid 2 iron that never left the right front fringe, broke slightly left, onto the green, and rode the swale down to the pin to about 4 inches.

Game, set, match. Kiss my Aggie ass, tsip.
