We'll be driving out to Las Vegas for the week between Christmas and New Year's. Are there any must-do golf experiences in the area? Doesn't have to be a round at a course there.

Shadow Creek

It's expensive but you will not believe you are in Las Vegas when you play it.

First class golf, food and service.

Do not play the club at sunrise. It is awful.

I agree with Cascata. Also, I really liked Reflection Bay out at Lake Las Vegas. I haven't played either course in at least 15 years. But those were two of my favorites.

That's an understatement.

Paiute. Wolf is my favorite, but all three courses are awesome.

Drive North to Mesquite and play Wolf Creek.

Unlike any other course you've ever set eyes upon. Guaranteed!

Im heading up there next week.

I've played Paiute once before, but not all of the courses. I think one of the posters here was a super there, but I'm not sure if theyre still around.

Some years ago I played Cascata, and it was a great golf experience - the creek through the driving range and club house, had a great caddie from Texas named Dave, and a cool golf course.

Havent played Shadow Creek or Wynn yet.

I'd second a round at one of the Paiute courses. Since you're driving, you'll be able to get there easily (it's a bit away from the city, so finding a ride out there can be tough).

I played Paiute Wolf, and it was one of favorite rounds (not that I have a ton of nice courses under my belt). I enjoyed that it's so isolated, that in pretty much any direction, when the golf course ends, miles of desolate desert begin.

Great suggestions, thanks! Cascata is out for this trip; $400+ for a round is just not in the budget this time. Paiute is more realistic. I think the Sun course would be the best match for my abilities. Any thoughts there? Wolf (and Wolf Creek, for that matter) would likely be more frustrating than fun.

I'm a 15HCP and Wolf is still my fav course of all time.

If a couple of hours drive from Vegas is doable, Sand Hollow in St. George, UT is a pretty nice course. Wolf Creek is a bit too tricked out for me.

My sentiment exactly regarding Sand Hollow and Wolf Creek.

But man... St George is windy. Its just hard for me to think Golf in that region in December. Temp could be in the 20s or 50s. On same day. Could rain or snow.

Now Palm Springs, CA...

Having played pretty much every course mentioned on here besides the Utah options, I'd say
* Shadow Creek is amazing, but definitely best when someone else is paying
* Wolf Creek is probably my favorite of all mentioned, but I could see it being frustrating for anyone approaching a 20 HC.
* Cascata is a very fun experience and has always been in ridiculously good shape every time I've played. The creek through the clubhouse and the waterfall at the back of the range are cool. Caddies are typically very knowledgeable, they're encouraged to play the course as much as they can when they don't have a bag.
* Wynn to me was not memorable. Conditions are perfect, it's like hitting off mats, but the layout is not great. The view of the Sphere now would probably be cool, but has nothing to do with golf.

FYI, I'm 98% certain that "Paiute" is a native American word for "windy as a MFer".

Beautiful courses, but they can be frustrating.
