Should be all entertainment, just happens to be big money on the line in the end. The concept is so new and different that I anticipate them making tweaks as they figure out what works and what doesn't, in basically every respect from the announcing, guests, and how the game actually works

Each team gets one 'Make the other team spin the wheel of punishment' per round. Other team spins the wheel and various weird handicaps, like one club per hole, no putter, etc. If handicapped team wins hole, they get 3 points, tie hole and handi team gets 2 pointsvs one for regular team.

Bring in Snoop Dogg as guest caddy. Hell, he is everywhere else. Camera accidentally catches him and Tony Finau blazing it up in the fake bunker coming back from commercial break.

Each team has to pick a member of the audience to hit a shot on one of the competition holes. Can be at any point in the game.

Kisner, my gosh. If I didn't know who he was id swear that was a random fan they pulled from the crowd. Just awful.

Can't keep having blowouts.
Hell they should just go that way. Pro teams of 2 and then they pick a random spectator out of the crowd as the 3rd member. Watching some business bro skull one over the green into the crowd brings the drama

I agree that they should incorporate an amateur (and their stats and hcp) for at least some of the events. Make a few of the events and teams pro/am's and do like the YouTube guys and pull in the rando that hit it over Brysons house.

Not disagreeing at all but that rando that hit the hole in one was probably a scratch or better golfer based on that swing of his. His very first swing, I was like, ok this dude is a real golfer.
He is. They had him on the golf channel today for an interview and he's a scratch 0.0 hcp.

One of the NLU guys had an idea of changing the scoring system to a points system where both teams start out with a certain amount of points (say 5,000) and then they make wagers throughout the night with their points. Considering all of these guys have done pretty much nothing but gamble on a golf course since they were 10, it's a natural fit. Also, it's a way to potentially maintain some competitiveness in the face of a blowout.

Would need to iron out the details, but I'm intrigued by the idea.

The "wheel of punishment" should include replacing one member of your team with Charles Barkley.

They should go full video game with this thing. Do away with Match Play and go to a modified Stableford scoring system that is really high risk/reward.

  • Double Bogey (or worse) -5
  • Bogey (-1)
  • Par (0)
  • Birdie (+1)
  • Eagle (+5)
  • Albatross or Ace (+10)

Also, to do away with gimmies, any missed putt inside 5 feet is -1.

If you want to get crazier, you could add a score modifier for consecutive successes, NBA Jam style. 3 consecutive FIR and GIR gets you 1.5x on your score, denoted by jet contrail on your shot tracer. 6 consecutive gets you 2x, and a fire trail on your tracer. Bonus ends if you miss a fairway or green, put it in a trap or hazard, etc. The multiplier is also in effect for any negative score. So if you are 2x and GIR, then manage to make a double, that's -10 to your score.

They could also add a "3-point line" ring for putts. 15-footer gets you a bonus point. 25 footer gets you 2 bonus points. 40+ feet gets you 3 bonus points.

The players could strategize depending on where they stand coming down the stretch. Down 2 with one to play? You can go for an eagle, or you can play FIR/GIR to increase your hot streak multiplier and then pitch to 30 feet for the bonus points long range putt.

Most matches won decides the playoffs. First tiebreaker is total points scored.

I think it's their attempt to answer the surge in Youtube golf popularity as much (or more) than it is about LIV. I don't know if they actively discourage their players to stay off Youtube, but it's clear LIV has leaned into it.

Bryson has basically revamped his entire image using his channel. Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson just did a match against the Good Good guys branded in "Majesticks" gear and on their team channel. Phil Mickelson has now put out a couple of videos playing 1 on 1 against Bryson, Grant Horvat, and the Bryan Bros.

It feels like the PGA Tour brass saw how popular Youtube golf is, saw how players were putting themselves out there more for their personalities to be shown, and wanted a vehicle to try and get more of that out there for their own guys but still be in control of the content. The problem a lot of yall are articulating is that it's half Youtube golf goof around and half competition.

I hope they figure it out because I've enjoyed the product. It just needs to be more intimate and less sportsy. Just go ahead and embrace the "Basketball" nature of it, make it about purses, gambling, and goofing around, and quit trying to act like there are serious emotional stakes. It's not that kind of event and never will be.

Now that I think about it, you're absolutely correct re: the PGA Tour and their players on Youtube. Other than those instructional vids with Tiger and Rory, the only guys off the top of my head I've seen from the PGA play on any Youtube channels have been - Colin Morikowa (vs Grant), Sahith Theegala (multiple channels), Si Woo Kim (vs. Micah), Min Woo Lee (Good Good), Xander Schaffele (BDS), and Wyndham Clark (BDS). Pretty much every superstar on LIV has been on multiple people's channels except for Brooks and DJ, with Phil and Bryson having their own channels.

Bryson was definitely an early adopter but players from both tours started recognizing the value of YouTube channels a year or so ago. On top of your list, JT and Jordan have done things with nolayingup. Id say about 80% of the bigger names on both tours have started to embrace it.

Doesn't it have to do with media rights as to why PGAT players aren't on YouTube with their own channel? That's one of Phil's big gripes when he left.

Guys have always been free to make any content they want. Phil's alleged gripe was that he was not allowed to use pga tour footage/highlights of himself without first getting the tour's consent. Which, as I understand it, he also doesn't have a right to do with LIV either.

In reality, Phil knew he was nearing the end of his competitive career on tour and wanted one last big payday but didn't want to just come out and say that so he came up with a story to try and paint himself as the good guy. It was always just about the money. And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. But that's what it was.

Yes I completely agree it was a money grab, I just remember him bringing that up as well. I've watched his matches against Horvat and Wes Bryant on his/their channels. Too bad he'll never be in the booth for a major broadcaster because he's great on there.

Phil would have no doubt been great in the booth. As he eased into an elder statesman role, he also would have had the red carpet rolled out for him at virtually every tourney. Since he's more personable than Tiger, he could have done just about anything in golf. He must have really needed the money.

You see the pros in a different element but the level of golf by some is......bad. Especially Kisner. Guy plays like that and he wont make one cut this year
Well considering he's now NBC's lead analyst he won't be making any cuts because hes not playing.
Hes doing both
Kiz tees off in about 45 minutes at the American Express. Will that bunker shot be in his mind the first time he gets in a trap ?

That is the rumor. I'm guessing that was definitely a part of it. But I also suspect he leads an extremely expensive lifestyle apart from the gambling and he started doing the math and realized the champions tour wasn't going to keep him in the lifestyle he was accustomed to.

yes, but conditions were (possibly still are) that they PGAT takes some of the money if they make youtube, tic tock, etc videos. I'm speaking to videos not even showing highlights from tournaments. That was where the major hang up was, not so much footage from tournament play.

There was an issue of the tour wanting compensation for things like The Match, which were full blown TV productions. I don't recall any squabbles over minor things like YouTube videos. Hell, I'd be somewhat surprised if any pro golfer was even making money off of YouTube 5 years ago.

And now this one is a blowout

I'm not a fan of the singles. They're boring.

Maybe they should go to 4 man teams and do 1/2 alternate shot and 1/2 best ball.

I like it when they're involved but just lose complete interest when the singles start.
