Have a group of 12 later this fall coming from Houston, does anybody have recs for good courses we can get on?

Might be too far west but I'll throw Vaaler Creek in Blanco out there. Tee times wouldn't be an issue and it's a great course.

this could be a hot take, but IMO unless you can get on at privates the public courses in Austin are not worth it. I'd go out towards Burnet/Kingsland and play those, or more west to the Vaaler, Fredericksburg courses.

Anybody been to Vaaler recently? In late July they'd lost quite a lot of their green surfaces to a fungus and was in a real rough condition.

Agree. I was just in Kingsland this past weekend and played at Legends and Delaware Springs. Both were in great shape.

All the resort courses are good:
Lost pines (wolf dancer)
Horseshoe bay
Barton creek Omni

But I don't know if it's worth it if not going to stay at those places. As was said there's some fine courses star ranch, forest creek, falcon head, and terravista. But honestly if you're destination playing, either stay & play at the resort courses or go down to kissing tree in San Marcos or lady bird in Fredericksburg or something like that

Avery Ranch is a solid track.Star Ranch is always in good shape, and not too difficult.

I'll throw Forest Creek in Round Rock on there. Always a good time and they take good care of it!

Played Vaaler 2 weeks ago. Hole 14 green is still in rough shape. There might have been one other that wasn't great, but overall it was fine.

Buddies and I go from Star Ranch to Forrest Creek. I am not a fan of the munis here in Austin.

That's a shame. Really enjoyed playing there when I lived in Austin for 10 years (moved away 12 years ago). I'll be up in Fredericksburg at the end of October and planned on playing Vaaler Creek. I play there a couple times a year and was thinking of getting a second round in on this trip. Is the Lady Bird Johnson course worth playing?

12 years ago was another lifetime ago for falconhead. Back then it was a pga tour affiliated course and was in great shape. Now…. Not so much. And a PAINFULLY long round. I hadn't played there in many years and my club nearby was closed for summer punching so my son wanted to give it a shot. Hard pass.
