While I am the opposite of you on links golf, I can understand why people don't like it since it involves a lot more luck on bounces and a different style of play. What I love is the creativity it requires to play well that the average American course doesn't seem to require much these days.

As for the Old Course, can anyone tell me it would be a top 500 course if it was built today? Few Americans would hear about let alone fall all over themselves to go play it. I am glad I did play it once but that is only because it is a box most of us serious golfers all want to check off. There are a lot of other courses in Scotland and Northern Ireland I still want to play.

ETA. One other thing I like about links is when I top the ball, I can say I planned to play it along the ground.

I was playing with a local at Lahinch. I saw him take a putter from about 50 yards out and run the ball up to 10 feet!

My buddy on one of the shared greens used his rangefinder to measure his putt. 37 yards.

I personally didn't like the city of St. Andrews...just a major tourist trap gouging Americans.
I can't even begin to describe how much I disagree with this take.

My daughter went to University there so I had the advantage of going there for four years in all the seasons - not just summer golf season. Great, great town.

I'm sure if you only went int he summer and stayed in one of the extremely expensive hotels that catered to American golfers and went to the restaurants and pubs right near the course you might have this impression. But if you rented a flat in town and discovered the other parts of the town you could not have this impression.

This should bring back a few memories. Four and Five are crazy! Lahinch Golf Club, Ireland

Nothing wrong with disagreements. We spent 4 nights in cramped B&B.

I don't like St. Andrews. And most likely won't be going back.

A guy at my club does it all the time and the fairways are zoysia. How he does it is something the rest of can't figure out because that grass is so unpredictable when used for the ground game.

Royal Birkdake was awesome

Liverpool was just ok

Lytham was fun and difficult

I totally agree with this. Royal Birkdale is in my top two, along with…. Royal Dornoch.

We had a great time in Dornoch by the way. Spent the afternoon in a local pub, before going back to the Glenmorangie House, which I also highly recommend.

Played it last June (2023). Final round of a trip that included Lytham, Liverpool, Formby, Sunningdale Old and New, Swinley Forest and St. George's Hill.

I suspect OP would prefer the London area courses, and they were really good BTW.

Well,

Was down in Myrtle Beach, (did not golf) and on my way back, stopped in Pinehurst for lunch. Exactly 3 hours from my house.

I believe this will be our next outing. Not liking the looks of Bermuda greens...

No doubt.

But do I still have to drive on the wrong side of the road and hit 300 roundabouts!

82 at Prestwick today and that included 2 doubles and a triple. Very solid otherwise. Some long par 4s and always felt in to the wind. Great course. Challenging but fair. No rain but constant 25-35 mph wind.

Every green was elevated but one. Runoffs on all sides. Would hate for that to be my home course. I understand that's part of the course defense but after a while it's a beating.

It is a very difficult course if u play it in it's normal windy conditions. It requires you to strike it well

Castle Stuart today. Much more manageable. 83 but hit the ball well, just made nothing. This was a fun and fair course imo.

Is this like 12 tee looking down at #11?

Or maybe 18 tee looking at #10?....seems far back to be 18

It's been 12 years since I've been back

18th par 5 on the left going back to the clubhouse and 10th on the right down the hill from the clubhouse and heading north along the coast. Hope you grabbed a few bags of most wonderful cookies at the starter's house at the turn.
