How good are guys from certain distances for one. That also plays in to course set up. For instance, last year in Italy there were a lot of 180-210 type second shots which the Euros are apparently strong in vs US. That drivable par 4 was also a distance that fit many of the Euros. No surprise the match ended there.

It's less about the analytics team for one side being better than the other, and more about the home analytics team having more control over course setup. The same Euro analytics team that won last year 16.5-11.5 lost 19-9 in America two years before. The last time we had a Ryder Cup where the home team didn't win by 5 or more points was 2012, and even that one was shaping up to be a blowout until a miracle Sunday singles.

When these data guys can identify marginal advantages and then get control of the course, it makes it really hard for the home team. You add in a situation like we had last time where most of the team got sick the week of the tournament, and it gets ugly quick. It's time to take course control away from the home team.

Both interesting points - hadn't thought about the analytics teams crafting the course. Agree, the home team should not be able to massage the course to their advantage.

Don't know the answer but the home field advantage is too strong in foursomes. I think they should tweak something.

For sure
Foursomes home vs away the last 5 cups
7-1 (end margin 5.5) Euro
6-2 (end margin 8) USA
6-2 (end margin 7) Euro
5.5-2.5 (end margin 6) USA
7-1 (end margin 5) Euro

In 2 of Europes last 3 home wins, they've had a bigger margin in foursomes than their eventual winning margin.

Youtube video that came out prior to the 2023 Ryder Cup discusses a lot of the ways the home team can trick up the course. On the surface I like the home team having a slight advantage, but agree with others it may be going too far. That said to me this is where a captain should earn his keep. Figure out what the home is trying to accomplish with their set up, and figure out a way to counter attack with player selections and pairings.

Right, US or Euro, these players' games are similar enough that you should be able to adjust… as long as you put your own analytics work in. That's where I think the US has been very stuck, lazy, and ego driven. Our approach has been heavily reliant on "who likes playing with each other?"

yeah both are tight with JP McManus who owns Adare Manor. I think he was wanting Tiger vs Rory for his course.

Thats surprising but maybe just saying that for now. It has long been assumed it would be Rory when Adare Manor got announced.
