Too Long Will Not Read: Billy kicked my ass 3-2 in the Semi-Final match. Billy is a great friend.

I don't think the Match Play Championship Threepeat was my 2024 goal. I didn't even enter the tournament but as a defending guy, I was put in with a first round bye. My focus has been the club championship where I performed poorly every year. Nonetheless, as I was in the match play, I wasn't going to lay down and not play.

Billy is a great player I played against in 2022 and I won 3-2. But about 6 months ago, he was diagnosed with cancer and the whole club rallied around him. He's been in treatment and in remission in good health and good spirits. He's climbed through the tournament and we matched up. He wanted to play this week (not due to play the match for another 4 weeks) so I said sure. I even arrogantly thought "should I just let him win?"

So Billy tells me he wanted to play this week because he has a tumor removal surgery next week and he'll be out for 4-8 weeks and he thanked me for accommodating his schedule. He came out firing and beat me on #2 and #3. On #4 184 yard par 3, he hit the most beautiful shot right at the tucked pin. We couldn't see what the ball did. I dunked it in the bunker. When we drove up, Billy's ball was not on the green. I said "Billy, I think you aced it.." Well, the SOB holed it, Hole In One!!!! So I gave him the biggest hug...picked him off the ground...and we both screamed and jumped up and down on the green like 2 little kids!!!

I was genuinely very happy for him. Then I immediately sent out the text to the group with pictures and let everyone know of the hole in one. Then Billy went birdie birdie. After 10, I was 6 down. I was having fun playing but my focus has all dissipated after the hole in one.

I clawed my way back to 2 down through 15. But on #16, he birdied to my par where he closed me out. It was a fun match.

For me, it was a big sigh of relief. I was on a 13 win match streak. I knew it had to end. I'm glad it did and I'm glad I lost to Billy. There couldn't have been a better person to kick my ass.

Thank you for reading.

Oh...during the match Billy says, "hey...you know at this course by my house, there's a same putter like yours that's been sitting there for 3 years, you want it???" So here is another Cure RX1 but I believe some of the guys at the club will be fighting for it.
