Going to be spending August in Monterrey. While I'm there I'm going to hit Pebble, Spyglass, Spanish Bay, and Pasatiempo. But also looking for some options that aren't so expensive.

I'm going to be very close to Pacific Groves and it looks like that might be a good home base. I foresee a lot of twilight golf there after work. But looking for others that are solid options without it being hundreds of dollars.

Any recommendations?

Join NCGA and you will get preferential pricing at Poppy Hills, right in Pebble. This is a better course than Spanish Bay. Twighlight should be cheaper too. Not so sure about Dukes membership. I had it for a year and played Del Monte some but it's a goat track and special green fees at Pebble, Spyglass and Spanish Bay were never available.

I had a membership at Bayonetta Black Horse (36 holes - public) and to me, they're more fun to play than Pebble. Yeah Pebble is Pebble but I just don't think it's all that especially for the price.

So you will see the forecast and it will say 55 low 62 high. So 3 in the afternoon, sun peeps out and almost looks heavenly and 62...so you go out to the range /putting green to practice then sun disappears and the fog and wind roll in. It would be literally 62 for 3 minutes then you're freezing your ass off. Keep your beanie and winter gloves in the bag at all times.

I don't know where you live now but flight into MRY is pretty easy nonstop from DFW.

There's Pacific Grove Golf Links, they call poor man's Pebble.

Monterey Pines is a military course and if you have a military connection, it can be economical. Almost like an executive course.

Laguna Seca - public is funky but worth playing it once. Club at Pasadera - private is not worth your money. Quail Lodge, tight and fun.

San Juan Oaks in Hollister is worth the drive.. Decent course with a few funky holes.

Going out further, Gilroy, Eagle Ridge Johnny Miller design. Just don't. He has no business designing golf courses. Another one Gilroy CC Muni... Lol.

Then you get into San Jose territory.

But having lived there, I'd make Poppy Hills my #1 choice, then Black Horse followed by Bayonette. Bayonette will beat your ass down.

Obviously I'm gonna play Pebble while I'm staying there. But I can easily see myself only playing it once. Crazy expensive but also I've heard rounds usually go over five hours.

Blackhorse is a good option. Pacific Grove is cool but kind of rinky-dink to make it a great home base, but the price is right at least

Pacific Groves is great. Especially for the price. Prob been 8-10 years since Ive plated it, but I swear it was like $50.

Half Moon Bay is like an hour and half north

I think Twilight is $44. And it's 8 minutes from where I'm staying.

Awesome. Hopefully you get a bunch of rounds in there. Very jealous.

Played Bayonet and Black Horse several times....both before and after the renovation. If you think its hard now, you should have seen it before the renovation! It's definitely better cost-to-benefit that the others on the list.

Don't know if they still do it, but there was a weekday special where the second round was like $50. It made two rounds there very reasonable.

A girl in Junior tournament 9 putted Black Horse 14th.. I don't know if you remember but it's 3 tiered and if you're putting down to the low tier pin, it's not stopping. I love Black Horse and have become comfortable with the course.

One time at Bayonet, I turned at even par, had a turkey sandwich and a bud and shot 45 back. F GOLF. To this date, I will not eat turkey (tryptophan perhaps) or drink Budweiser while playing golf.

I think I may have 4-putted that hole!

Before the redo, number 16 on Bayonet was a beast. The green was canted so hard from right to left that there were only a few places you could put the pin, all on the left hand side. If your second shot end up on the top of the hill to the right, you had no chance. Your third was going to be from the traps on the left. Also, that long par-5 on the front was so narrow it was like trying to play down the alley behind my house!

The forerunner to the Korn-Ferry Tour played their tour championship on Bayonet for two years before the redo. I think the winning score was +1 one year and -1 the next.

I agree on the turkey and beer! That would put me right out!

I'm planning on spending July in Carmel. And couldn't agree more--the cold is why!

Anyone have any Cypress Point connections?

Has anyone played the Preserve? Is it worth trying to pull lots of strings to try to get on?
