This is for all you "caddy daddies" out there. I'm caddying for my 10 yo this weekend in a junior event here in Texas - not our first time, but I was brushing up on some of the rules for the green and came across something that I think would come in handy for giving her a good line for a putt.

We use a line on the ball and from what I can tell, it is perfectly legal for me to mark her ball and align the ball with the ball alignment line. I'm mainly looking to speed up play and cut out the "no, slightly more left, etc" with her lining it up. Obviously I can't help her stance alignment etc.

Has anyone ever witnessed this in practice? I never have but can't find anything that says I can't do this.

I agree, she's just not there yet on reading some of the more complicated greens. I would more do this in a scenario where she is deliberating and I'm sitting there with the answer on a double breaker. Get the train moving. I prefer to have everything lined up while others are putting if we aren't in their line.

I personally don't believe the lined ball is beneficial unless you are showing someone who can't see the right line. I stopped using it when I play.

I have a 14 year old daughter that has been playing for almost 3 yrs. She played Little Linksters to start and now plays Junior Tour, Beltway Tour, US Kids, First Tee and Under Armour Tour. Little Linksters, US Kids, and UA Tour you can caddie while Junior Tour, Beltway Tour (the level she plays), and First Tee you cannot. I have never seen a caddie line a ball up for a player, that is not to say it is illegal, to be honest I have no clue. What I see routinely is the player line up and the caddie point to a spot on the ground as the line to pick, physically put their finger on the green as the line to pick. On a personal level, putting is the strongest part of my daughters game. I just pull the pin for her. She will ask my opinion on a break (verbal) from time to time (quick conversation) and then she does her thing, so I am hands off on the greens.

Having seen both sides and what has helped her the most, I like First Tee's model. Leave them alone and let them play, no caddie except at the youngest ages. The rule is stay well away from them. I think that is what has served her the best as she moved from playing 9 to 18 holes.

have her eye a straight line to the hole...if it breaks left, tell her to keep the ball on the right side of the line, an then obviously opposite if it breaks right. Will teach them to keep it on the high side and keep it simple enough early on. She'll figure it out from there.
