looking to book a golf trip in October of this year. Lajitas is on the short list, but I am thinking it is going to possibly be out of our price range for that time frame. Wanting to get something of decent value and curious what some other options besides the ones I have listed below. Price wise trying to keep it around $1500 or below. Looking for something outside of TX unless someone here as a hookup that could get us on one of the nice private courses for a weekend. Will be four of us FWIW

Driving options: (would like to keep it around 8hrs at most)
Hot Springs Village Ark.
Southern Mississippi area (Biloxi area)
Lake Charles

Flying:
Scottsdale
Albuquerque

Lots of overseeding happens in October in Arizona.

Robert Trent jones trail in Bama seems to fit this very nicely.

Interested in this thread. Really wanting to give Mystic Creek in El Dorado, AR a look but I haven't talked to anyone who's actually played it (stayed would be a plus)

Tapatio Springs in Boerne is a great short trip. There are condos there where everyone can have their own bedroom. The course there is fun to play and there are some good courses to play on your way home.

George Strait does not own Tapatio anymore so can't vouch for the quality of the food now but it was very good a couple of years ago.

Forgot about Tapatio. Was an easy trip from Dallas. Itching to go back

And OP, if you still live in Austin County, play Valeer Creek on the way home. It is on Hwy 281 just south of Blanco. It is a hidden jewel.

Listen to this man; we experienced this first hand last year. Still got to play Talking Stick and Legacy but both ranges were already shut down and you could tell the upkeep was not on pace per normal.

October is THE best month for golf in Texas.
So I wouldn't waste time and money to travel out of state.
Except for the RTJ Trail.

I played once in October and then it's CPO the first 2 or 3 weeks after they reopen. It's a December-April trip in my opinion.

I've been told Dancing Rabbit in Mississippi is a good spot.

funny you mention this course. A friend of mine is from there. He's a serious golfer who's played his fair share of great courses and constantly brags on this course. Says it's always in great shape and it's very difficult. He's tried several times to get me to come up there but I haven't made it work yet.

I've been to HSV twice and going back in April. Group is in DFW so about 5 and half hour drive. The courses aren't going to blow you away but there's plenty of elevation changes and tree lined fairways which is a welcome sight after playing golf year round in NTX. The fairways are decently wide so courses aren't difficult (it is a retirement community after all) so if your objective is to have fun and relax, drink beer, and play a couple money games on the course, it's a good fit for what you're looking for and can easily be done for less than $1k pp.

Edit - I should also add the courses in the village are BYOB so make sure you load up on the way in to save some additional money. They do sell alcohol at the courses though in case you don't bring your own but we didn't find out they allowed people to bring their own until after we played the first time.

as has been mentioned, RTJ in October is great. It's an annual for our group.

I've recommended Glenwood Country Club in Glenwood, AR, here before and will do so again. Nice, fun course with reasonable all-you-can-eat daily green fees and a comfortable lodge on property. Our group plays there two weekends every year, Thursday through Sunday morning. I usually spend about $600 for the whole trip and play up to 100 holes of golf. BYOB, but you can buy beers at the course.

In regards to that are do yall think it would be better to just stay at Tapatio for two nights or rent an air bnb in boerne? I feel like with Vaaler and Tapatio close, along with buckhorn it might be better to make a central location and hit a different course each day?

Diamante in HSV was my home course for 6 years albeit it was 20+ years ago. One of my best friends retired in HSV recently and those old resident mofos are highly annoyed with TX golfers coming in for outings. They complain about littering, slow pace of play... Hair color... Whatever they can find fault with.

Just saying.

Don't forget to wear your A&M golf attire to annoy the Hog fans. If you have A&M iron covers, bring them too.

You know, many HSV residents are Illinois Nazis (what the locals call the Midwestern retirees) representing mostly BIG schools, in shorts in 45 degree weather.

TBF every member is annoyed with anyone they don't know playing in front of them at anything short of a full sprint.

Then, if they do know you, they talk even more trash

It's their own damn fault. They got them Yamaha gas carts that do 45. And measure their quality of round based on how long it took. Buck 45 is their goal I think. For 18.
