My trip to Nebraska led to being invited to South Carolina in a few days to stay and play at Congaree

I've never been...I'd love to hear any and all recommendations/suggestions

You are going to play a super exclusive private kick ass golf course and you come here to ask a bunch of muni hacks if they have played it.

Nice humble brag.

Because there will be some jackass golfer like me who barely got invited as a 3rd alternate to chime in and pretend to know everything about the damn course..

But this time, it's not me. Never even heard of that goat track.

Seems like the Whispering Pines of South Carolina. Started by two Houstonians - Friedkin and McNair

recommendations and suggestions:

hit it in the fairway
hit it on the green
1-2 putts to make it in the hole

what exactly are you looking for?

here is a recommendation:

if you fly into Savannah, do not eat at Circa 1875. I thought the food was subpar!

From my experience, coastal South Carolina courses have dark sandy soil that tends to be soft and my club digs a bit more. Fat shots tend to be a bit more penalizing compared to hard pan fairways.

Make sure your cleaning brush is in good working order to keep your clubs clean!

Anything that someone has learned from playing the course or staying at the property....anything from menu items to to get or stay away from to "#7 plays uphill even though it looks flat"

From I've read the course is extremely firm and fast and the bunkers are all waste areas that also play firm

This kinda stuff!

Thanks for heads up!

We are grabbing dinner in Savannah but I don't think its here. I'll double check

I was lucky enough to win a stay and play there. Went in May 2022. I've played some other high end places (oakmont and victory ranch) and I can tell you this was easily #1.

Just what you'd expect from this level of place when it comes to course, service, facilities....everything

It is a very hard track and greens very fast. Lots of slope changes and some tiny greens!! Caddies had great knowledge to help. I liked the front 9 more than the back 9. There is SOME water on the course but doesn't really come into play a ton. It has a lot of sandy waste areas you can hit out of too (common to SC if you ask me or have played in that area).

Make sure to get some of the meat pies at the turnhouse. It's actually on #9 tee. Get some Colmans mustard on it too. All of the food and drink we had there was incredible so I really think you can't go wrong no matter what. Make sure to check with your host on dress code. If he's a member he might have one view. We were guests solo so I made sure to wear slacks and a sport coat just to be safe.

If you like to fish make sure to ask them for rod and reel. I'd say bring a small tackle box with spinner and texas rig and fish the pond on the drive in. Supposedly better fishing at ponds on the course but didn't press luck trying to go back there as could easily walk to pond from the cabin. Watch for gators!!

We spent about $500 in the golf shop and wish I had bought more!!

you can go in/out of Savannah or Charleston (unless your invite got you on private closer to Congaree as it's out in middle of nowhere). We love charleston so made it a long weekend. If you go to Charleson eat at Hank's and thank me later.

If you want a hole by hole description I'm happy to jump on the phone and discuss. Thinking about this place just brings back such a great memory!!

Here's a pic from #2 tee that my wife took..one of my favorite holes

After you went to Ballyneal and Caprock, you will be amazed by the cottages at Congaree. I was blown away. Didn't love the golf course, but not crazy about a lot of stuff that Fazio does. Driving on the property at dawn or dusk is surreal, the spanish moss hanging from 200+ year old oak trees, hard to describe it. Service is 5-star, food was good, accommodations 5-star, great pro shop swag, it's all you could ask for an exclusive private club experience.

So u liked caprock more than congaree?

Thanks for your post

I liked parts of both. If I had to pick one trip to do again, I'd probably take Congaree because it's easier to get to and better accommodations. Caprock golf was better.

I was actually supposed to play Congaree today, but somehow my host was unable to secure a cottage. I'm thinking Aggie369 took my spot!

To add on make sure your leaf blower is charged and you have an extra battery in your bag.

It is one of the most non "Fazio" Fazio courses that you will find in his recent work.
By that I mean not the usual Fazio glitz and glamour that looks great but lacks golf substance and shot value at times.
I have played many Fazio course and would not have guessed he was the architect if I did not know ahead of time.
They moved some big trees out there. Ask your caddy which ones and you will probably be amazed.
Fairways are firm and fast. Greens are superb.
The rooms are 5 star and the food is wonderful. Have a drink in the bar where the bartender floor is recessed so it does not block your view.
Also tour some of the old houses on property if you have time.

Also try to get there before dark, it is in the middle of BFE.

Really cool place

Nicest club I've been to, complete 5 star experience. Food, service, lodging, accommodations, golf course, caddies.....all 5 star

We flew into Savannah and drove about 50 min to Ridgeland SC...this little town of a few thousand people. There aren't any signs or anything for the course, just a dirt driveway you turn into.

36 on Friday
36 on Saturday
18 on Sunday morning

The course is firm and fast and not forgiving around the greens. It's fair off the tee with lots if waste area/bunkers. Some water but not much of it comes into play. There are some drivable par 4s but depending on wind and tee box selection I also hit driver into a par 3. It plays as long as 7,900 yards with a rating of 79.4 and slope of 155. It's a big boy golf course and your ball striking better be on point because balls won't hold on putting surfaces.
The sights lines of the razor edge bunkers really are pretty and shape a lot of fairway and greens. Some bunkers ate 15-20 feet deep. I didn't strike the ball very well or drive particularly well but I did putt well and played well out of the bunkers. I hope I get a chance to go back and when my ball striking is better.
Really cool place

There's a leaf holding up the ball... Prevented it from rolling in. Leaf Blower rule..

It had rained the night before...buddy of mine hit that one. Caddies all said "that's not supposed to happen"

The samd from the impact came out just right to keep it from rolling down

awesome photos!!

the way you described it is exactly what I was trying to convey earlier. You're lucky to have gotten 5 rounds in. We only got 2 and it made a huge difference the 2nd time.

I loved hole #4 even though I think the green was the hardest on the course...and that's saying something b/c there were not very many "easy" ones.
