The golf shop at Karsten Creek (home of the Oklahoma State golf team) sells more than two million dollars of Swinging Pete golf gear annually. Fact. This is a great example of marketing and branding done right.

We definitely need a Swinging Ol' Sarge from Imperial. Bjork needs to make that happen tomorrow.

It's also lame that we can't buy the stuff the golf team wears.

Can you imagine how much Aggie golf gear would have sold during The Masters weekend and throughout this week as the whole world learned about Sam Bennett and Brian Kortan? Another huge missed opportunity.

It's honestly bizarre to me. It's like A&M/adidas doesn't want to make money.

A&M athletics has never been able to get out of its own way. Zero thought leadership

Is donating the only way to get something that says "Aggie Golf"? The only thing I could find is a very generic shirt at AO.

Yes, unfortunately.

Donating is also the only way to get a t-shirt for the A&M fencing *club* team. The demand for golf team merchandise is way higher, but the supply is just as limited. Makes zero business sense.

70,000 current students, 500,000 former students, and it's harder to get gear than for a 14u select baseball team. Unreal.

No doubt. I don't know what the problem is. It seems like you could go to a company like Johnnie-O, especially after Bennett's performance, and release a line with that Ol Sarge without any problem. Hell, i'm 99% certain that the same company that makes Rhoback also makes, Good Good, Breezy, Sunday Swagger, and all these other brands. Give an entrepreneurial golfing Ag a licensing agreement and make some damned money. It's stupid.

So it takes at least $1,200 to get the pullover and polo. No amount appears to get the hat. Interesting.

I get lots of hats every year with my donation to both the AWGC and the AMGA. I've also found that if I want something, all I have to do is ask. One of the many benefits of donating directly to the teams via the above. You also get priority points. Personally, I'd rather give money directly to the team/coaches than a retailer.

That's great and all but they'd make a lot more money selling $30 hats and $90 polos than expecting people to donate a minimum of $1,200 for access to them.

Actually, the golf program wouldn't. The gear in question is given to the golf program by Adidas (and other vendors) for those in the program and donors. 100% of the donation (and no cost for the gear) goes to the specific Men's or Women's programs in question. Hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. And the coach has full discretion on what to do with said funds within the program.

If the $30 hat (in your example) was sold via a retail outlet and under the adidas/licensing agreement, a couple of bucks in profit only goes to the overall A&M athletic department. This bucket of money is allocated to the sports per capita, so golf get's pennies on that hat. This is why they do the current model.

Now, would I like them to do both somehow? Maybe some exclusive gear to drive some donations, but broaden the appeal by selling in more outlets? Or get more aggressive in marketing and merchandising in general? Hell yes.

I'm explaining above why it makes sense for golf within the constraints they operate under. In A&M's defense, we (loyal and engaged fans on TexAgs) are not indicative of the overall fan base. For example, only 3% of living former students actually give a dime to athletics. So several hundred of us on this website who want this gear is not representative of the demand (or lack thereof) out there. While A&M doesnt excel in marketing and promoting itself, you can bet Adidas, Peter Millar, JohnnyO, Imperial, and the rest of our partners would sell the crap out of this stuff if they could. But most Aggies complain about $60 shirts from Adidas or $30 hats. It is what it is.

Oh, and get rid of the bevel .

You could charge $40-50 for that hat and sell a ton

$1200 entry points is partly how you end up with low participation.

You can't tell me this can't be done when OSU is literally doing it already.

So we're not talking marketing and capitalism now, we're talking about the feeling of superiority and exclusivity from a handful of donors. This might be the most Aggie statement ever. Good grief.

My first year to participate, and it was a great event. Players scattered on a number of holes hitting boombas. Got to spend some time with them as well as Coach. Even talked to Sam for a little.

Oh, and the gear is badass…

Cart path only for Aggie Golf Day on holes 3, 4 and 13. Turkey Creek came out of it's banks on Wednesday night. Tanner and the crew at Traditions did an incredible job of getting the course ready to play..

My first year doing AGA and think it's great.

Round of golf with the team, lunch, dinner, convo with Sam and other golfers and coaches, convo with Alex Caruso, pullover, polo, hat, golf bag and genuine appreciation from the coaches for the support. Also met a few people that may become professional relationships.m. I'm guessing they have 150-250 members. Let's call it 200 at $1200/avg. that's a quarter of a million dollars directly to the program.

I do think they could sell some basic golf gear AND the exclusive AGA membership stuff, and make a few more bucks/increase Aggie Golf brand, but I think the current system is having a strong impact on the program.

Here's a wild out there idea I just had…… maybe they could also offer a $500 option, or $250 option.
