Interesting

Hopefully it becomes a bit more accessible...its quite good

I'm looking forward to how you liked each course. Prestwick is fun as ***** Eat/drink at the red lion pub just down the road from prestwick. It's where they first came up with the idea to have the British open. Also don't leave it short of the green on #17 at prestwick =)

Mind of I ask you what that set you back?

I lived in Scotland for 6 years and then took my golf buddy over there in 2014. I did all the planning myself and it set us back about $4,900 a piece (10 days.) I'm trying to plan a trip to Ireland, but it's going to be much more involved with both golf buddies and our wives. Was wondering if this makes the tour companies worth it?

Did St. Andrews ask to see proof of your handicap? Did any other courses require it?
Thanks

St Andrews was only course that asked us on both trips to Scotland and one trip to Ireland

$8500 per person? Did you take limo's to the courses? What was the main expense?

And this $8500 is not including air fare to Scotland?
Aggie369

Sounds about right price wise without airfare

Good lord...didn't think it would be this high.

Averages about $1,000 per day when u factor in airfare, hotel, golf, food, transportation, caddies

It's entirely possible to do it cheaper. But if you're going to play mostly name courses, use caddies at every course, have chauffeured transportation, stay in something more than nice B&B's, etc, then that's about right.

I did a week a long time ago where we used a trip planner. We drove our own Mercedes van (4 of us), stayed in a couple of very nice B&B's, picked off 3 "name" courses and 4 other good courses. Used caddies twice. Had a great time.

Just depends on what kind of trip you're looking for and how much you want to plan yourself. No right or wrong way to do it.

My buddy and I planned a trip to Ireland a little over a year ago. Trip got postponed due to COVID then again because he got a knee replacement. So need to add in some inflation factor but this was our cost estimate spreadsheet.

Prices shown are per person, splitting costs of lodging and the car. Caddies I think are a mix of individual caddies and forecaddies. Portrush and Royal County Down are for two rounds.

All in cost was $6700 for 10 rounds, food, lodging, and transportation for 10 days including airfare (which is now more expensive) but I bet ballpark it's still close.

Getting driven around adds A LOT of cost if you're not going with a decent sized group.

I seem to remember that it was a big jump if you have four people, easily justifiable with eight, and a pretty good deal with 12+.

It's a first-class kinda deal. The Hotels are top-tier, we have a driver and a Concierge that handle everything - driver is there for us not only to and from the courses but also around anywhere else we want to go tourist-wise or out to dinner, etc.

My round trip business class air was about $4200 on British Airways.

There are definitely cheaper ways to do it all if you don't quite have the budget. But courses like Carnoustie and Muirfield and Turnberry, Kingsbarn etc aren't cheap. 225 or more at minimum and some over 300 depending on the time of year. And you have to have a caddy at almost all of them.

I just wanted to let people that are thinking of going over there to go ahead and do it. I don't regret one penny I spent on this trip. A little background. I was invited by a friend and his brother who had planned on making this trip. Don had gotten a hold of a guy named John Dooley with Concierge Golf Ireland back in 2019, for a trip in 2020. He had asked John to get us a hotel or something for lodging, and John replied he could get us a four bedroom condo in St. Andrews, cheaper than hotels. It was great! Right down the street from the Dunvegan. John planned all of our golf tee times, and included in the price were the costs for Jubilee, Carnoustie, Kingsbarns, and the Castle Course. We were on the ballot for the Old Course, so prepaying wasn't an option. We also had one open day, and ended up playing at Crail, which was also out pocket. John had requested caddies for us at all of the courses, but due to availability, we only had them at Carnoustie, and KIngsbarns. So we got push carts and forecaddies at the rest. After all of the Covid business, John asked we could make the trip this year, and push our dates back two weeks due to the Open. Of Course! I cannot say enough good things about this guy. Any problems or questions we had, he took care of. He honored our deposit from 2019, and of course let us know that prices had increased for 2022, but it wasn't too bad. This is a copy of the quote he sent us in 2019 with prices:

I'm thinking airfare was around $1100 round trip. We ended up pooling money for taxies. This worked out well, no need for everyone to dig in their wallets every time we went somewhere. One person handled all that (me). I think we all put in 200 pounds, and had some left over. The ride to Carnoustie was 85 pounds, and 15 pound tip X2. The rides to Kingsbarns, Crail, and Castle were all less than 30 one way. The ride back to Edinburgh was 200 pounds, tip included.

So all in all, I think my total outlay was between $4000 to $4500. The condo worked out great. We had a regular kitchen, and basically just ate breakfast there. Also had a washer and dryer, so we didn't have to take as many clothes as normal. Place had a nice little backyard where we drank some bourbon and smoked cigars after we got back from the pubs.

Totally agree. I went to Scotland in 2015 and had less money than I do now. It was expensive at the time but now I don't even think about it. Don't regret a single penny. This kind of stuff is what money is for.

Also, don't make this some bucket list thing you're going to do when you retire. You might die before then. Or one of your buddies you want to go with will die before then. Or you'll be alive but walking 36 will lay you out for a week.

Find a way to make the trip.

This is a great example for how you can have a wonderful trip without totally breaking the bank. My trip was too long ago for my pricing to still be relevant today. (i.e. round-trip airfare from South Texas was $700.). Thanks for posting your details. Makes me want to go back.

Edit: my reply was meant for MarkPro.

Any thoughts on Kingsbarns vs Elie vs Crail vs Lundin? We have one open spot on our agenda and we are looking at these four courses as options. I am leaning Kingsbarns or Elie, but didn't know if anyone had thoughts on those.
