Only have time to play one course. Any recommendations? Decent, not great, golfer but not sure if I should choose The Oaks or Canyon course. Comments appreciated.

When are you playing?

Oaks is where they play the Valero Texas Open. It's an ass-kicking of a course, but it's got nice design elements. It is cart path only for the next 45 days, so don't say you weren't warned.

Canyons is a Pete Dye course that is mildly challenging but super playable and great for +10 handicap golfers.

The Oaks course is rounding into tournament shape right now, so tee boxes and fairways are 9/10 and improving. Canyons is dormant, but always in great shape. Greens roll smooth and fast.

Personal opininon, play Canyons. Enjoy the cart with built-in bluetooth speakers and the elevation changes throughout the course.

Both are really good in my opinion. Oaks is more penalizing if you get off line I think. Better views on the Canyons. You can't go wrong with either. It's easier to make 100 on the Oaks. Not that you probably ever shoot 100 but if you ever did this course is one to do it on.

Thanks, great input. Playing end of May. I hate to skip a PGA course but sounds like Canyon may be the way to go for a more enjoyable round. I assume Oaks is more expensive? Can't learn anything from their website, have to call.

I played the Oaks last year when I was
In SA. I liked the layout better and always wanted to play 16 with a bunker in the middle of the green ala Riviera. 18 was a nice closing hole as well. I am not sure if it is more or not as I charged it to my member number via passport.

Only played the Canyon course but it was fun and in great shape when we played (Oct 19). A lot of elevation changes if you like that sort of golf

The monthly fee isn't horrible for what you get, but the initiation is a kick in the testicles.

They are likely the same price. Reach out directly to me (obiwgt @ gmail . com without the spaces) and I can set the round up for you and three guests at a discount. Typically, summer rates are like $250 a person but I can get you on for $150 I think.

Each day, one of the courses is members only. However, that just means guests can't play on the course. Members and their personal guests can play either course any day of the week if there is a tee time available.

Honestly, Oaks isn't TOO bad if you can swallow your pride and play from the "senior" tees, which are green. Course is 6,242 yards from those tees, which is a healthy distance but manageable for sure. I'm a relatively long hitter (definitely not a bomber), and the blue tees (6,600+ yards) is about all I care to take on at the Oaks course. I play the gold tees every other week or two, and my scores go from high 70's to mid 80's. I've played the black tees once, and I didn't break 100. I was an 8 handicap at the time.

I have played each course a handful of times. I think the views are a little better on the Canyons due to the elevation. Oaks is more challenging. Both are worth checking out. If you're playing in May, that's after the Valero, so I doubt it'll be cartpath only - though Obi Wan would know better than me.

when is the Oaks course being shut down for play? I'd love to get out there before the tournament.

No no, you're right. When I said cartpath only, dates had not been mentioned.

It won't be cart parth only after the tournament, other than typical weather issues.

I don't know what day it closes, but as of right now, it's scheduled to be open until atleast March 11th. Let me know if you want to get 18 in. If I'm in your group, it's only $99+tax to play.

I can assure you, hitting 4 irons into par 4s is exhausting. I had 3 birdies that day though!

Appreciate the offer, thanks. I'm trying to lock in which day/time to play with the other person I will be with and then let you know.

There is a reason it is cheaper if he plays in your group.
