I am looking to get fitted for a new driver and I want to keep total cost as close to $500....Is it still a good idea to use Club Champion, or would I be better off doing the "van" fitting at PGASS?

I am assuming if I went the club champion route, I'd just get my specs and then order from discount dans, or the similar?

I believe the general consensus on here is go there for the fitting but take your specs elsewhere for purchasing due to price.

Correct. The shaft that Club Champion will fit you for will cost $500 on its own. Make sure to let your fitter know that you want to be fit into a stock/non upgrade shaft for which ever manufacturer you end up going with. Then you can take your specs anywhere and get it cheaper. You won't get a "tour build" but you likely won't know the difference either.

I saved almost $100 by buying my Ping G410 from Discount Dan's online as opposed to the fitter and any big box store.

If you think you can get a driver at CC for $500 you're gonna have a bad time.

I just wanted to get fitted for a stock shaft/head, and then order it online when I see a sale or whatever. Can that not be done for around $500 if I go to CC?

It depends on what driver you go with.

If you don't buy the driver there, you are paying the fitting fee of $150.

That leaves you $325+tax for the driver -- which means used for any of the top-line drivers: Mavrik, SIM, G410, etc.

You can get into a Ping for that. Or an Epic Flash, TM M5 or M6, Titleist TS and maybe a new Cobra. An F9 for sure.

Mavrik is harder. Sim not at all.

You take on some risk with used drivers -- if you buy it used, and the face cracks -- and they do, especially Callaways...you are probably out of luck.

Also might be tough to find your spec on the used market unless you are patient, and need standard length.

You might be better suited watching for the next demo day at a local course, one with several manufacturers present. They usually only have the stock shafts available to try and and typically will fit you for free if you buy that day. You might also get a discount on the club purchase.

You aren't considering the shaft CC will fit you for. They fit me for a ~$350 upcharge shaft.

My concern would be that even though they're not fitting you for an upgraded shaft but it won't be a driver you can get used or last season's or anything.

I think you'll be hard pressed to pay for the fitting, the shaft, and the driver for under $500. It'll be close but not a given. You may have to scour GolfWRX or get creative on sourcing whatever is your fit for even though it's not an upgrade.

I got fitted at Club Champion for a driver and went with a stock shaft. Since it was the newly-released model and we stayed with a stock shaft, it was the exact same price as PGASS or anywhere else online.

And for the record, I've now been fitted at three different places ... Club Champion, PGA SS, and Sellinger's Power Golf in Dallas. PGA SS was totally worthless as their "fitter" was just some old guy that doesn't know much about anything. Club Champion and Sellinger's experiences were similar, and I enjoyed both.

One thing to watch out for: Club Champion can be REALLY slow to order/deliver anything you buy from them. I swore to myself that I would never buy anything from them again after how long they took to deliver last time.

maybe I am missing something, but CC charges $150 for fitting.....I've seen numerous new Titleist, Cobra, Taylormade, etc drivers listed online with multiple shaft options for $400-$500. I'm good with those prices. I just dont want to spend 1K on a damn driver.

My goal....is to hit my current driver, then hit new drivers, with new stock shafts that I can get without an upcharge. Is this not possible at CC, or PGA SS? Do they only let you hit new heads, and exotic shafts?

I'm responding to the idea of getting fitted and buying elsewhere. If you are talking apples to apples of stock drivers, the prices are generally the same.

If you buy new, and ask for the best fitting stock offering, the price will be roughly to same as buying new/retail elsewhere -- if they include the fitting cost if they buy a driver.

Unless it is an older model, retail is retail for drivers.

Buying used is the only way to get fitted and buy elsewhere and still get in under $500.

Dumb question of the day for you.. If you buy the shaft separate from the driver, how would you recommend determining which "driver head" to go with?

Appreciate the information. Based on that, sounds like if i go to PGASS to look at drivers it's more of an effort of finding the shafts you want to try (would definitely start with the ones you mentioned) and then finding a 2 - 3 year old driver head to replace it with..

If you don't mind the minor hassle, the volume of drivers and shafts that change hands on Ebay is astronomical.

I've bought and experimented with numerous heads and different shafts, and have resold the ones that didn't work out for minimal cost -- basically shipping, and $10 or so -- and have actually sold some things for more than I paid. Ebay has made things incredibly easy now. A lot cheaper and less hassle than driving to Houston.

I had a lot of buyer's remorse from my fitting experiences, where I paid a a premium for a driver I hit far, but didn't hit very consistently.

Some of that was getting fit and then playing a lot of golf, and adjusting my swing. But still. I'm moving into smithing my own clubs now. It is pretty simple, and nice if you are a club ho, or just like to tinker with the next thing.

I did this at memorial park. I didn't order that day and the fitting was still free. I did order the next day though

Thoughts on whether or not to leave these fitters a tip after the session?

I've never left a tip and have had many fittings. Never crossed my mind TBH. I've tipped after a lesson though.
