It's not ok to make noise in someone's backswing. So it's not ok to play music. Now if your 4 some agree, then so be it. Doesn't mean everyone else want to hear it.

So those of you who play music, do y'all keep quiet in others backswing? If so, why?

Don't get me wrong. I love music. Just not on the golf course.

No, if we play music we aren't stopping it for a swing. For most, it's sudden, unexpected noise, that is a problem.

I'm not trying to be one with nature or any of that BS. I wouldn't ever use a cart if that was the case. I'm out to have fun with friends playing a game that I need to not take too serious. Music helps me relax and think less.

A few years ago I joined an older single on the 5th or 6th hole. I was listening to a Rangers game at a pretty low volume. He said "you kids always have to have stuff going on" I was like 36.

No it's not. You want that, go take a walk in the woods. The point of a weekend round is to get 4-5 hrs to relax and not deal with the normal day to day stuff that plagues us. For some of us, that relaxation involves listening to music.

For me, this does not apply to vacation rounds at special courses and usually not country clubs, esp if I'm a guest of someone. All other courses, I'll play my music at a reasonable level.

Then relax at home with your music.

I don't know about the rest of you but golf has never been a relaxation activity for me. It involves intense concentration for me.
next texags tourney I'm blasting Michael Bolton greatest hits if I'm behind your group

As one poster said, as long as you don't get the multiple genre vortex going with multiple carts then i'm happy to listen. Honestly, after a few holes i'm not even sure I notice it.

I'd love to see OP in a horserace like we play at my dad's member/guest. 60 drunken dudes in groups of 4 playing the same holes with multiple beverage carts, speakers strapped onto golf cart roofs, etc.

Definitely pro-music for me. Its a time and place thing though and you have to be respectful. Yesterday was a 5 hour round at one of the local courses so I always paused my music when we pulled up to a tee box or green where another group is in earshot.

I started using the AmpCaddy and it's cool that you can rotate it towards or away if you need to. I dont play my music any louder than being able to hear it 10 yards or so from the cart.

We talk freely regardless of the situation. If we pull up to the tbox and are having a group conversation we continue even as people are hitting their shots. With the music it all becomes background noise. Again this is with groups that I play with on a frequent basis. Wouldn't do this with people that I don't know well.

If I wanted to gloss over, I would've clipped the above section.

So it's both legal and illegal. Like beta blockers to help with putting.... Or was it for high blood pressure? Of course the golfer will claim its just the background music. Doesn't assist with golf at all one way or another. Then again if it helps to relax one thereby helps the tempo, is it legal?

Since we've beat the music topic to death...what is the ruling of using alcohol as a performance enhancing drug?

If I'm playing for a score I won't start drinking until about 15 but in our club championship i always see a few guys start at hole 1. They definitely relax and play better with a couple of drinks, is that a performance enhancing drug, are they cheating?

Along those lines, I know a guy that smokes a cigar the entire duration of the round. Lights up on the first box and will smoke 2 cigars a side. Never takes it out of his mouth. I argue that it is a swing aid because his shoulders have to clear under it and in order to do so he has to take a smooth tempo backswing? Is that a training aid, is he cheating?

I play it all the time now, phone in my pocket on Pandora. Can't hear it unless you are within 5-10 yards of me, if that. Don't care what my regular groups think about it, they are all *******s and lack concentration anyway. If I pick up with someone, I'll ask and if declined, then no issue. If they say go ahead, I'll have it on lower volume than normal and I'll stand mostly away from them during any shot.

To me, it's like all the other issues in golf (slow play for example), if you are impacting other's rounds in a negative way, you should be pulled off to the side and summarily shot. I like to have something to distract me between shots and I can still hear the birdies singing, my group cussing, and enjoy my walk at the course.

I'm ok with music being played as long as its not that sh*tty country music.

All joking aside, as the other poster said I'm not sure if I ever even really notice the music when I'm in hitting....but I will say its annoying when there are multiple carts playing different songs and when I'm trying to tell someone I found their ball or something but they can't hear me because of the music in their cart.

I played with a guy last week at Torrey that complained non-stop about music in the group behind us. He was a lot of fun. A couple highlights:

-I was fixing my ball mark 20-25 feet from the hole on 1, and his wife told him he was out (45-50 foot on the fringe). He said "No, I'll wait for proud to finish fixing his ball mark". I was in about the blindest spot/angle I could reasonably be (about 9:00 from him).
-On 2, he told my buddy to mark his ball. The guy was about 60 yards out, and my buddy's ball was about 8 feet left of the hole.
-On 4, he told my buddy to move more to his side on his tee shot. My buddy was at the guy's 3:30-4:00. At that point, I said "Good Lord, are you kidding me?" Fortunately, it stopped at that point as I think his wife talked some sense into him. My next response was going to be pretty bad if he'd kept being a tool. I was happy when he chunked it 3 times in the greenside bunker on that hole, threw his ball down in the rough, and then chipped the next shot like nothing had happened.

i usually agree with you but just feel you're being a little totalitarian on this issue, but to each his own. by the way, i don't ever play music but i don't mind at all if others do, whether in my group or not.

It's all good to not agree on everything. After all we play different equipment and have different preferences on golf courses etc. I'm often criticized for calling Bandon Dunes mickey mouse golf.

Call me stuffy traditional totalitarian but you guys are a bunch of entitled brats who think just because you like to play music, people who don't are dicks.

Time and place for everything. If wanted to listen to music on the course, I would use ear buds. I just expect others would return this courtesy.

I get it. It's a new trend. And yes I can tune it out. I am just bothered by some who play loud music and expect others to like it. For those conscientious golfers who turn it down, I appreciate the courtesy.
