I'll be in Gulf Shores, AL all of next week and playing golf Monday and Thursday. I chose Gulf Shores Golf Club for Monday...looking at Peninsula or Kiva Dunes for Thursday. Any opinions on those courses, or something else I should look at?
Can't go wrong with either Peninsula or Kiva Dunes. I actually tend to prefer Peninsula, but it depends on which 2 of the 3 9's are in play. But Kiva is excellent
Any opinions on Gulf Shores Golf Club? Is no one mentioning that because I said I was already playing there.. or because it's below those others in the pecking order?
Kiva Dunes is showing they aerified this week as well, if that makes a difference.
Against the grain of this thread a bit, but I didn't just love Kiva Dunes. It was in awesome condition when I played it though.
There are some great holes out there, don't get me wrong. But several places on the course have holes really crammed next to one another. There were several times we had tee shots go past us all the way to the other side of our fairway. It was strange because it's not like you can necessarily see anyone because most of the holes are lined with a dense but skinny mangrove kind of junk. Sometimes fairways are like 15 yds from one another and you don't realize it. Add to that it was REALLY windy and the crosswinds on those packed in-down and back stretches were really kicking some people's asses. It was really unsettling being peppered like that.
yeah, I've only played it once and it was early in the day, so I think I benefited of not getting my ass whipped by the wind, which also probably limited getting pummeled by anyone parallel. I didn't really have a complaint about the parallel nature since they do use the terrain and smaller vegetation to separate them well. But I could see how if could get out of hand when the wind is up.
I've played Peninsula the most of any of the GS courses. I think #7 on the Lakes 9 of Peninsula has the best view of any of the courses there. Pretty cool par 5 that runs along Mobile Bay. Craft Farms is quality too, but both courses there seem much closer to what I'd play in DFW.
I have actually grown to enjoy lost key. I go to Perdido every year with family and I've probably played the course close to 15 times now. It's always in great shape and has good afternoon rates.
I played gulf shores golf club 2 weeks ago. The greens were still recovering from being punched, but are probably in great shape now. As others have said, Peninsula is awesome. Have fun!
Kiva Dunes. My current assistant super is from bama, and worked at Kiva for a couple years before coming to Texas. based on his stories, sounds like that place is the place to play in the area. We are going mid July to Orange Beach and already have this on our list of things to do.
