McNeese transfer guard Tyshawn Archie commits to Texas A&M hoops

Former McNeese guard Tyshawn Archie has announced his commitment to Texas A&M.

At 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds, Archie averaged 14.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists as a junior for the Cowboys. He shot 43.3 percent from the field, 36.9 percent from 3-point range and 90 percent at the free-throw line.

He earned first-team All-Southland Conference honors and was named to the All-Southland Tournament team as McNeese ran through that league on their way to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Archie was one of the most productive all-around players in the SLC last year, finishing inside the top five in steals per game, field goals made, player efficiency rating, win shares, offensive box plus/minus and defensive box plus/minus.

Archie is an aggressive defender who loves to press. Having watched McNeese a fair amount last year and even at the NCAA Tournament because they were in the other Oklahoma City pod, Archie always stood out as a point of attack defender who can frustrate opponents. He was second in the Southland in steals with 57 last year, averaging 1.7 steals per game, and he knows how to impact winning, leading the conference in box plus/minus. Offensively, Archie is a high-volume 3-point shooter who has improved throughout his college career, most notably shooting 36.9 percent on over five attempts per game last season.

He’ll be a spark plug off the bench who will play with aggression, getting downhill and on the defensive end. Don’t forget that he can still knock down a couple of 3-pointers when the rest of the defense is focused on the other alpha guards A&M has in their loaded backcourt.

Bucky McMillan and his staff recruited Archie in the portal last year before ultimately landing elsewhere, but that familiarity and those relationships never went away. The Houston native played at C.E. King and started his career at Tulsa. He was teammates with PJ Haggerty and current A&M graduate assistant Ari Seals at Tulsa in 2023-24. With those connections already built in with some people in the program, it’s no surprise Archie visited and quickly committed to the Aggies to round out a complete overhaul of the back court.
