what are some fun tournament formats that you've enjoyed? we're trying spice up our 2013 tournament calendar at my club.

for instance, we're doing one tomorrow that's a spin on matchplay. there's a party tonight where 4 team captains do a school-yard pick, 68 players total. You get put on one of the 4 teams, and assigned a partner. tomorrow it's two-person matchplay, each team will play 3 nine hole matches and accumulate points for each match. winning team at the end eats steak, 3 losing teams eat hamburgers.

Here's some ideas

Shamble - Play the tee shot like a scramble, then play your own ball the rest of the hole

4 club (or whatever number you want) - everybody can selelct any 4 clubs to play the round with.

Daytona - 2 man game where the low score is the tens digit and the high score in the ones digit. The order reverses if both players have a double bogey or worse.

Stableford - works on a points system (1 for bogey, 2 for par, 4 for birdie). High score wins.

This is just a few. Google "golf games" and you can find hundreds.

Here are some I remember from a fundraiser we did for our fire department years ago.
- Mystery hole - par three had 5 holes but only one flag
- Realtor sign - on par 4 second shot had to go thru (croquet style) a realtor sign.
- Long drive - Every player had to drive with custom 72" shafted drivers
- One club - each player in foursome used one club on the hole, not necessarily the same club

We played a 18 hole scramble where the front nine played legitimately and the back nine were all gimmick holes.

Invite Wounded Warriors to play for free in the tourney and assign one wounded warrior to each threesome or foursome in the field. Great way to give something back to wounded warriors.

Old farts use their original clubs. I still have my vintage '69 Ram Gene Littler blades. It's a hoot!

Rule #1 They look just like these:

Played a par three tournament at Pine Forest, Bastrop in the 80's. All 18 holes, the regular par threes you played as is. On Par 4's and 5's you placed the tees in very interesting places. Over trees, over hills, some short, some long, off to the sides etc.
The best part was, it was quick, so you had time for BBQ and beer.

We have a tournament called the Red Ball. Two games in one. 4 man teams, best ball among the 4. Also have red ball component- each group is given a red putt putt ball at the beginning of the round. A rotation is established and each hole a different player must use the red ball to play the hole. Each team turns in a red ball score and a best ball score. If your team loses the red ball, you are out of that part of the competition. The player that loses the red ball must wear a red t shirt for the remainder of the day as a sort of scarlet letter.

We do a fun tournament at Kingwood that is built around the Majors.

Two man teams, best ball gross/net.

At the end of play, everyone picks from a hat filled with Pro names from that day - you get their score added to yours.

Your team can really move up/down the leaderboard based on your Pro draw and it makes for some fun conversation as everyone is turning in their scores.

Have a "Big Hole" Scramble where the holes are extra large.
