Getting busted sneaking beers onto the course

Got caught this weekend, hole 15 of Mesquite GC.

Marshal noticed our cooler wasn't exactly like the ones they "rent". Stopped and asked. We played ignorant. He told us that TABC could slap everyone with a fine ($175/beer for us; upto $5,000 for them). He took the beers and the cooler and let us pick them up upon completion of the course. Overall he was nice about it, though I'm sure he knew we were full of chit.

Typically, I'll rent the cooler and buy 2-3 beers and stock from my bag. The used to use this cooler a couple of years ago, I guess they changed recently.

Anyone have any stories or tips to prevent this from happening?

I really do think they can get a pretty hefty fine if TABC caught them. I doubt you could though.

At Bear Creek one time a few years ago the cart girl sold us 2 6 packs at like hole 3 then stopped us at the turn and accused us of sneaking on beer. The lady went absolutely nuts on us tried to kick us off. She yelled at us for a while and finally we just drove off and went to 10. Never been caught actually sneaking on beer though.

My friend and I had a Sunday t-time at 10 AM and decided to sneak a six pack on. At the 3rd hole the cart girl came by and noticed us drinking them(we didn't realize they couldn't sell beer until noon) and asked where we got them. We told her we bought them at the club house. She laughed and said that was impossible because they can't sell beer until 12. She told us to keep it discreet. So we did. That was the only time.

Do this frequently but never had an issue with getting busted. My general experience has been that many marshals don't even like to do their regular job of speeding play along, so being the course TABC enforcement is rarely a priority for them. As far as the cart girls go, we just try not to make it too obvious or rub their nose in it by chugging away as she rolls past or by letting the empties pile up in the cart.

Remember what they sell and buy the same kind.

Bring a flask with hard liquor

When you see a cart girl coming throw your towel to cover your beers.

we always buy 2 or 3 from the cart girl and tell her we drink slow

Yeah, that is always a solid method. Again, as long as you have a way to dispose of your empty before cracking open the next one, then for all she knows you just have the old empty in the cupholder. She's not going to inspect it.

The starter is probably the biggest risk, and in that case, just don't be stupid by putting the beer in the cooler before you start. Beer in golf bag, some bottled water in the cooler, then flipflop after you start.

I had a buddy show up at a course with his bag full of beer..like bursting at the seams. The bag boy picks it up and his zipper gives way spilling beer cans everywhere. My buddy slipped him a 20 spot and not a word was said.

There is a lolpoor aspect to it, but as far as my alcoholic golf buddies go, it's actually employed more to ensure the beer is constantly flowing vs. any prolonged waits for the cart girl.

This more so than the lolpoor. Although I will avoid paying $3.50 for a miller if I can bring my own. Some courses I play you are lucky to see the beer girl once

Troll, Mesquite doesn't have a golf course.

Me and my buddies were playing Tapatio Springs on a dudes weekend and like couple of jackasses, we pull up on a busy Friday at the exact time of our tee time and are scrambling to get shoes on, pay the greens fee, pick up carts and of course stuff 24 beers into our cooler which was stealthly hidden under a big towel (how obvious could it be). Needless to say, we were busted on the fairway of the first hole.

The best part was that the only beer they had in the beer cart was warm so we literally bought our original case of beer off the cart girl for $60 after paying $20 at the store. Luckily they repaid us with a case once we left.

I cant complain though, we ended up playing 45 holes that day and ended the day by playing the ridge course 3 times in a row. What a scenic 9 holes of golf, perfect for 4 young guys to get drunk, bet money on each shot, and blare music. One of the best golf weekends I've had.

We just take a cooler and put a towel over it with club head covers scattered all over. It's completely obvious but luckily most the places we go are crapholes and the staff doesn't seem to care, knock on wood.

Charge a reasonable amount for booze on the course and people wouldn't do this.

It's not when they don't even bother to put out a cart girl and the clubhouse is 400 yds from the 9th green/10th tee.

I don't usually bring my own but if I'm out to throw down a few and the course is known for having slow/****ty cart service, I'm going to bring my own.

Before I joined a club I would almost ALWAYS bring beer on the course. Never got caught.

What is this, amateur hour?

Yeah, if there weren't frequent "supply chain" issues, then I doubt we would even go to the trouble. I'd be willing to pay for the hassle of not dealing with stopping by the store, getting a cooler prepped, etc. if I could rely on beer being available when I want it. Also, not all courses have a squared-away cooler situation which becomes an issue when you're buying multiples since you know you won't see the cart girl for a long-ass time, so if I have to go to the trouble of bringing my own setup, then you're less likely to get my beer revenue.

I would bring beer mostly b/c I like to drink good beer and the best you can usually get at a muni is heinis or shiner.

I DEAMND EXCELLENCE IN ALL THINGS..... except my golf game.

Hey, cut me some slack I'm in a good mood it's masters week. This week is better than Christmas and the birth of my second son (first son was the better son).

For those complaining about the price, do y'all take your own beer into bars ?

And if service is an issue how about asking (while making a tee time) if you can bring your own larger cooler and let the course supply the ice and beer...

We supply coolers that hold a six pack and will give a group as many as they want..

If your worried about running out before the turn .. How about you ask if a cart girl is working and purchase enough beer before you start ?

Basically every response or "reason" in this thread is just an excuse for breaking the law... TABC will fine you and the course could lose their liquor license if caught multiple times..

I knew it wasn't the right thing, but it certainly wasn't the only dumb thing I did when I was 21. I don't even like to drink while playing anymore unless i'm goofing off with some friends.

I also sometimes exceed the speed limit while driving to the golf course, occassionally come to a rolling stop vs a complete stop, and might have swiped an extra fortune cookie when I ate chinese food for lunch before the round. I love living dangerously and drifting outside the margins of the Aggie code.

Do any of those actions effect the viability of a functioning business? Do you understand what would happen if the course did lose its license.
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Even worse, I AM PUTTING LIVES IN DANGER!!!!!!!!!

I've managed to do this kind of thing for 15-20 years without getting busted or getting anyone busted. I've pumped thousands and thousands of dollars worth of business into these courses over the years so I'm also not that worried about depriving them of a couple of bucks here and there by not giving them 100% of my beer business. It's a few beers every once in a while.
